Waiting for the nancies from the first two pages to show back up. Kennedy just best Buzz Williams. What's the new narrative guys?

Most of the "nancies" have already said Kennedy did a good job down the stretch. That doesn't mean that the criticism early in the game isn't valid.

You'll find a lot of mazags post attempt to degrade a type of post that no one actually made.

You'll also find him no where after a loss.

Cause most fans can move on after a loss and don't feel the need to disect every 5 minute stretch of the game to find a reason to pin the loss on the HC and players. It's basketball........**** happens to every team at some point of the game. Texags just likes to dwell on it. It's a telling sign just how quickly this thread got quiet after such a great win. The "talking heads" would be on page 20 right now with the finger pointing and Buzz lovefest if we had lost.

The first half was tough. It wasn't merely that they were hitting everything. It was also that we were a step behind on rotating and had too large of a lineup to keep up with the movement.

The recovery in the second half demonstrated the heart of the team as well as highlighting the athletic advantage. There is little doubt that with superior talent BK does a better job of coaching within the team. And the handling of the end of the game was pretty good. He beat Buzz today.

Those people who "just move on" are also not here in the offseason, or every game. It's nice to be a super casual fan, but that just isn't an option for some of us.

I think this thread got "quiet" because this is generally a time to be with family, and we still found a way to get a lot of pages in

Just finished watching on TiVo after attending to family matters.

Yes PH, magic does happen the Williams sees > 20 min! Particularly teamed with Davis.

In the first half, my wife heard me screaming at the TV and asked "Who died?

I replied, "The game of basketball! At the least it has been set back at least 50 years."

Nightmares of BK's first 3 years were reality again in the 1st half and the first 5 min of the second half. Poor offensive flow. Too many bad perimeter shots. Hampton was virtually worthless. Then fever dreams hit a pitch when Collins and Hampton are in TOGETHER. An abomination. Collins looked and played like an IM guy who had won a contest.

We're playing 3 on 5 on offense and defense was even worse. Collins, Hampton are playing a semi-packed in, yet overplay 2-3 zone, then horrendous man to man leaving open looks for 3. They cost us easily 15 points. Adrian Branch was OPENLY LAUGHING AT OUR OFFENSE IN THE FIRST HALF.

We did get the ball inside some in the first Half.. Missed a few chippies, to be fair, VPI was having all over our bigs like Lilliputians where Davis was Gulliver, but hardly a foul called.

Then needed help arrived...in the name of Robert Williams. His athleticism, rim protection, fierce rebounds, tip outs athleticism began slowly to take over. By miracle or mistake, Coach Clouseau (aka Billy Kennedy) place Williams and Davis in together...and the revelation of Big to Big passing! Beautiful pass from Davis to Williams for a bucket.

We dodged a bullet when Williams hurt his knee in the first half.

In the second half, Hogg, gilder, Williams, Davis take charge. Hogg and Gilder with 11 assists. Hampton minutes were limited. Hogg with a double double 17 pos, 10 assists...playing like a seasoned veteran and TOUGH...nailing that 3 to put us ahead for good.

The best offense starts with Great Defense...and we showed that in the second half. Hogg, Gilder, Williams, Davis PUT THE CLAMP DOWN. the 3s stopped falling. Va Tech just got abused inside. 34-24 rebounding edge. Davis had 3 blocks, Williams 1, Hogg 1. Williams altered a ton of shots.

Great win for the Ags against a tough and well-cached Buzz Williams team! and momentum going into the game tomorrow against presumably UCLA.

The successful players and coaches prefer to analyze what happened and make adjustments.

So what did we do:

More Williams...he should never play less than 23 min a game again. Branch joked about BK hiding RW.
Less Hampton and Collins
Hogg, Davis, Gilder, Williams got more involved in passing
It's the Defense, Stupid.
Offense off of defense

I don't know what ties Williams has, but I know I want pay back from our tourney game.

Hell, YES!! Sloan fouled. Basket counted for a ball that went over the backboard from behind...another foul going OB. We were ambushed by the Refs

this...haha.

BK's coaching and rotations in the first half were atrocious. I watched on tape just awhile ago...but we found some making late in the manner of Davis + Williams, Trocha + Williams, Miller + Williams. Big man to Big man passing. Using our combo guard and wing to pass into the interior.

DEFENSE to create offense.

That's not possible with Hampton and Collins in together. Collins' "defense" may be the worst I've seen in a long, long time...we better be up (or down) 30 the next time he's on the court.

BK leaving Davis on the bench down the stretch was key. We won it on the defensive end with quicker Trocha and Williams. He would have been blasted on here by the experts if we had lost but it was the best lineup at the time. Great comeback win.

agree it helped and would add only giving Collins about 2 minutes in the second half was key. that guy, bless him, is D3 level at best.

Disagree completely on the assessment of Collins' defensive efforts tonight. He was quick enough to keep up with the VA Tech guards and closed out really well on the perimeter shooters. I count only 1 time where Collins didn't close out on a perimeter shooter which led to a bucket and that was because he slid over to cutoff penetration and left the wing open. Other times he either prevented the shot attempt or his guy missed the shot due to the close out. He also helped out on penetration and disrupted a couple of plays. He will likely be out there again if we face a quick, perimeter oriented team.

On the offensive end, he didn't make his open shot attempts and let the shot clock run down on one possession. If he is not knocking down shots or producing assists he will be a liability on offense.

Correct. Was never so glad to see Caleb in.

Davis and Williams defense and scoring brought us back into the game. Hogg put it away.

He's not quick. He has no length. He gave up multiple open 3s. He was in the wrong position. He overplayed incorrectly. At a high D-1 level Hampton + Collins are 3 on 5 on the offensive end. 0-7 FG. What part of this is not clear!!??

We SUCKED until we put LENGTH on the perimeter to stop the 3s and passing around the perimeter...forcing there guards to attempt to drive...and they were met with fist of fury from Williams, Trocha, Davis. LISTEN TO ADRIAN BRANCH!!! We won with interior play, rebounding, athleticism.

Do yourself a favor and watch the great football games tomorrow. Srsly, there are some great ones.

That's great! This team is mentally TOUGH! Tavario put in a productive 10 min with rebounds, a hook shot, tenacious defense. Every team needs utility glue guys like Miller. He's undervalued by the board as a mobile back-up undersized post player. Understands his role.

Nope. I challenge you to rewatch the game and find more than one possession where he gave up a made 3-point shot. The other 15 defensive possessions he played well, closed out, and forced penetration. He was a contributor to some big defensive stops and his quickness is up there with any of the guards, probably more so. He was a liability on offense tonight but defensively he did fine.

I just read this entire thread and the extrapolation that occurs based on a few minutes of play or even a single play is outrageous. Sometimes I wonder if people saying these things say the same things to people they are watching the game with in person. Then I remember the guy who sits in front of me at Kyle Field and understand they probably do say these things.

I would LOVE to pick Kennedy's mind regarding playing Collins significant minutes. Either Smith was suspended for a half, he was sending a message for one reason or another, he is more dependable and has a better understanding of the derlfensive sets we were running, or he was confident we were better than Va Tech and was resting his better player, but playing Collins so many minutes is incomprehensible. It worked, so I'm not going to get upset about it without understanding why.

It was a 1 point game with 4 minutes left in the 1st half so how atrocious could those rotations have been?? We actually played worse and got behind in the first part of the game and at the end of the half with the majority of the starters in the lineup. Hogg and Davis were mentally shaken during those stretches. The coaching staff actually did a good job of calming the play down during TOs to keep us in it.
