Multiple sources tell 247Sports that Oklahoma is parting ways with transfer Austin Grandstaff, a former Top247 four-star recruit who had arrived in Norman in January after starting his freshman season at Ohio State.

In 10 games at Ohio State, Grandstaff averaged 4.4 points per game in 11.5 minutes per game. He shot 33 percent from behind the arc.

Grandstaff was the No. 14 shooting guard in the class of 2015, per the 247Sports Composite, and the No. 54 player overall. The Rockwall (Texas) product was a prolific scorer averaging 29 points per game as a senior in high school, shooting 33 percent from three-point range.

Managed to stick it out 1 semester at Ohio State and now 1 semester at Oklahoma.

Played on the same AAU team as Elijah Thomas. Not sure these guys are getting good advice from that AAU coach and Grandstaff's father Wes. I wonder how long Thomas sticks it out at Clemson.

On a related note, since I stared a Sooner basketball story thread, center Akolda Manyang a couple of weeks ago got suspended indefinitely for a felony aggravated assault. This was the kid whose 24 year old brother passed away shortly before the game in the Sweet Sixteen vs. us, and he had to leave the Sooners during their NCAA tournament run.

ESPN article below on the transfer epidemic plaguing college basketball. I agree that kids are too quick to pack up and leave at the first sign of adversity and that is not a good thing long term for the kids themselves (most importantly) and also not a good thing for the sport. I also agree that in some circumstances the best interest of the athlete is to transfer to be better developed in a different environment.

Many coaches are critical of graduate transfers but I am not since they are progressing academically and have accomplished the primary goal of obtaining a college education. I see no problem with it. My level of concern is with undergrad transfers who are only concerned with basketball, have little or no concern for getting a degree, and who are ignorant about their pro potential and the level of commitment it takes to develop into a better player. Of all the transfers each year, I would expect that a very small percentage will ever play basketball professionally and I'm skeptical that a majority of the transfers will ever finish their college degree.

During the Big Ten's annual spring meetings here the past two days, men's basketball coaches discussed how they could curb the onslaught of transfers in the sport -- something Michigan State's Tom Izzo described as "an epidemic."

While no course of action was decided upon, coaches and administrators generally agreed that the transfer situation has spiraled out of control, especially with graduate transfers who are immediately eligible at their new schools.

"It's a vicious cycle," Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. "Where we're headed is ultimately free agency, and that's not a good thing."

ESPN's current transfer list is swelling toward 1,000 players seeking new schools, and it includes dozens of graduate transfers.

Wow. There are 351 D1 college programs? That is getting close to an average of 3 transfers per program in a single recruiting cycle.

there were over 700 transfers last year. 40% increase in one year is kind of insane. For the first time in a while we're actually below average on the number of transfers we've had.

I really don't understand how anybody would have a problem with grad transfers though. They graduated from college. Normal people usually either get a job or go somewhere else for grad school. Why shouldn't athletes do the same

It's a bold prediction, but I'm going to predict that no returning player will transfer at any point in their career.

Obviously TTM & the fish are unlikely to leave, so basically you are predicting that Kobie won't transfer? Not too bold of a statement considering that we only have 5 returning players...

Don't forget about Tavario. I'm not going to argue with you a out the boldness of my prediction because that would be silly.

Agreed, that would be silly. However, my point is that sneaky qualifier "returning" player makes all the difference because you would not make that prediction about the entire roster. Just pointing out that it's a statement that you knew would SEEM bold, but in actuality is quite hollow. And clearly Tavario's a senior, so he can't transfer.

Tavario can transfer and play his senior season elsewhere

You are correct, he has about three months to decide that he would prefer to sit out for an entire calendar year to play his senior year elsewhere. Silly notion indeed.

Funny the coaches don't like players bouncing around, but certainly don't mind packing their own bags for greener pastures.

Pretty sure the transfer rate is still less for athletes than regular students. Not sure when you break it down by sport.
