It's a promotion for him but still sucks to see him go. Can't be easy on BK replacing 3/4 of his staff coming off the best season of his career. Good luck to Mitch though and hope we hire a good one to replace him.

Source is a poster on TexAgs who was at the basketball banquet when Kennedy announced he was leaving.

Good for him. Aren't fourth assistants not allowed to make more than 50k or something? This is like a quality control guy in football getting his first position assistant job.

Something like that. I think only three are actually allowed to have the assistant coach title and do everything assistant coaches are allowed to do

He was making over $150,000. I'd be surprised if he gets half that for his new gig.

Flanigan was making $100K as an assistant there so I would assume Cole would be somewhere in that neighborhood. Couldn't find salaries for any of the other assistants

Good luck to Coach Cole and his family. Good coach, man of integrity, very good family man.

This is a great move for Cole because he wanted to be on the road recruiting and back on the floor coaching. While he was here at A&M, he wasn't allowed to do either.

In his position here in Aggieland, Mitch had to stay off the court, well, at least stay out of bounds during practice and he wasn't allowed to get on the road and recruit. That's tough for a guy who was the head coach of his own program for so long (no matter what level).

This summer, he and BK spoke about the different possibilities and where they saw his position trending, but it wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that the official decision was made for Cole to actively pursue a coaching job.

Congrats to Mitch Cole and his family! This is the step they were looking for and I'm glad he found a spot so quickly.

He had no choice. Glad he landed the job.

I do find it odd that he wasn't considered for one of the assistant jobs that came open.

Years ago, the 3rd assistant was called the restricted earnings coach and their was a limit on the salary for that position at every school. $16,000 grand plus camps. It also could include room and board. Jeff Lebo filed a class action lawsuit against the NCAA and won. The earnings restriction was then lifted and coaches received backpay.

Cole was a special assistant and there was no restriction on his earnings, but he could only do limited coaching duties both on and off the court.

The problem was we needed a #2 associate head coach guy and a proven recruiter with strong connections. If Rahim had left, that is probably a role that Cole would have fit into more naturally. Just don't think Cole has the recruiting connections to fill the one role or the experience to fill the other

Gabe and Hop on radio this morning:

- Kennedy went to high school with Cole.
- Cole family loved it here.
- Cole wanted to get back into an unrestricted coaching job and Kennedy instead hired Maligi and another to be announced soon guy (Hop's impression is that Kennedy already has the last assistant coaching position filled and just a timing issue now on the announcement).

Recruiting comments:
- John Gillon (grad transfer from Colorado St.) is a guy to keep an eye on.
- Eric Vila expected to sign with A&M.
- Corprew probably out of picture, despite his talent all programs seemed to peel off him and go different directions, so guess is academic issues.

Is that really the standard, Logan? Seems like a strange place to draw the line

That rule of staying off the court during team practice for certain titles has been around by the NCAA for many years.

Will the new assistant to be named shortly be considered the top assistant (i.e. Associate HC)? If so, I hope BK hits another home run like he did with Stansbury. Need another good bench coach who can recruit well.

From what I've read on different threads

-Logan said Mitch Cole was hoping to be promoted to the 3rd asst position, however Maligi was hired for that position
-Robert Kirby interviewed for a position on this staff. He was the Assistant Head Coach at Memphis and is now the Associate Head Coach at LSU. I think it's safe to assume he was interviewing with A&M for the top asst position

So the likely breakdown is this:

#1 Assistant Position - vacated by Stansbury, this position is yet to be filled. But I don't think it necessarily comes with an elevated title like Assistant Heach Coach or Associate Head Coach, because Stansbury was promoted to that position this past offseason. State institutions often keep titles like this in their back pocket as a means of providing a raise in the future. I'm guessing the better the hire, the more likely they get the Associate Head Coach title right away.

#2 Assistant Position - the position vacated by Keller. No confirmation has been given that Amir has been promoted to this spot, or if there is even a clear deliniation between #2 and #3 within the A&M program, other than differences in salaries.

#3 Assistant Position - I'm guessing that Amir filled this spot last year, but has been "promoted" to the #2 position, and Maligi is now #3.

Of course, most/all of this is speculation and who Kennedy can hire as the last assistant may determine the final pecking order.

Wow hadn't heard that Gillon might be interested. I'm a Colorado State hoops season ticket holder, so I saw a lot of him this year.

Hell of a scorer and slasher. Really quick end-to-end. I'm not sure about his defense as he's a bit undersized for a major conference (and Eustachy doesn't really appear to ask the team to play defense).

Regardless, he'd be a great complement to Caldwell at the point for next year. He's pretty much the opposite from Anthony Collins, in that he's assertive and aggressive with the ball in his hands.
