Sounds like it basically ended his officiating career, after a year or so of bouncing around leagues he decided to hang it up.

Dave used to stand up from his seat and give refs the choking sign. This guy tossed him and the swc officials effectively ended his career.

Dave had a history of doing the choke sign to other refs around the SWC. When Dave did it to Bryan Stout he walked over to the security guard, who was almost asleep, and let him know that Dave needed to be escorted out.

Ref said that he got a pretty good praise out of some other refs up in New York after doing a Syracuse game during some kind of dinner.

Ref doesn't regret the decision to this day.

To be fair to that guy, if it was just a fan doing it, its no big deal. But Dave South shouldn't be doing **** like that.

No doubt. Dave was definitely in the wrong here and justifiably kicked out.

Ref told Dave that if he wanted to buy a ticket and do that kind of stuff in the stands, that he was more than welcome to. But not while broadcasting and being essentially part of the game. ie media

"Well, folks, that's all for me today. I've been kicked out of the game by that guy."

Hmmm. So a print reporter should be held to the same standard as being part of the game? Don't think so. Ref was out of line. What happens if Dave tells the audience the ref choked? Wow!

Dave and a print reporter are very different things. Dave is basically an extension of A&M. He isn't expected to be impartial and can openly cheer for the Ags.

For instance, when I shot for a newspaper or something, I wear all neutral stuff. When I shoot for A&M, I wear A&M Adidas stuff.

I wouldn't cross the line Dave did, but he isn't really expected to be an impartial observer.

And look for me courtside tonight.

Being part of the broadcast has nothing to do with the ref. Just like the dance team has nothing to do with the ref's. Until somebody actually interferes with the game it is not the ref's issue. Ref's should have no say about anything going on in the arena until it actually affects the game and that wasn't.

I've known Bryan Stout since 1990. I haven't seen or talked to him in years, though, and I never spoke with him about this incident. I don't think it had much to do with him not continuing his career -- that was more about getting in with another supervisor which he and others decided they wouldn't do. There were still other guys that worked SWC games that went to other conferences after they left the SWC and I'm sure some worked in the Big 12. There were others who were in the SWC pipeline (working smaller college games for the same supervisor and a rare SWC non-conference games) who made their way into the Big 12 and other conferences. I was about 3-5 years away from that same pipeline when changes were made around the time South got kicked out.

I know many of you think the SWC officials were terrible (they weren't) but you also probably didn't like the Big 12 guys either. And now you don't like the SEC. You aren't going to like any officiating staff if you continue to root for the Aggies -- as I assume everyone here does (including myself) -- because you're always going to think that many calls that don't go our way are wrong, and thus the officials are biased. Paul Galvan, the then-SWC supervisor, was basically let go because he repeatedly told Tom Penders to FOff. He wasn't a t.u. homer and when Steve Hatchell came into the conference and made changes, I'm sure Penders was one of the first people to call him and complain about the officiating.

You may not like what Stout did in this game (generally, its best to not get involved with non participants unless necessary), and it may not have been something he should have done based on the rules, but it wasn't because he had anything against the Aggies. He was one of the better SWC officials and worked other leagues and lower level NCAA tournaments. Terrific guy, too!

Do you have a rule reference or an approved ruling from the NCAA rule book at the time that supports this? Or is this just something that makes sense to you?

I had to chime in and defend Dave on this one. He was not in the wrong and his gesture was very subtle and not demonstrative at all. I only know this because I was sitting next to him and had to finish the broadcast. The official was suspended after the game for his overreaction and, in fact, never called another SWC game because of it. His focus should have been on the court. The SWC commissioner and supervisor of officials agreed on that.

The ref also never said anything about Dave buying a ticket and sitting in the stands, either. And for what it's worth, Dave has never stood up in his seat and given a choke sign to a ref in any game.
