sounds like it is at least being discussed at coaches meetings.

How do we make college basketball watchable again?

Tom Izzo thinks he has an answer. He went on a radio show and discussed what he thought were a couple ways that the nationwide scoring drought could be addressed. Namely, reducing the shot clock.

“One of the guys I have great respect for — Johnny Dawkins, who is at Stanford — and we were in our meetings the other day, and he said, ‘We have the slowest game in the world,’” Izzo said. “As you say, the international is less. The pro is less. The women’s is less. And here we are with 35 [seconds].”

The NBA and FIBA use a 24 second shot clock, and women’s college basketball uses a 30 second clock despite the fact that they don’t have a 10 second back court violation.

“It was talked about at our meetings in Atlanta,” Izzo said. He was on the NABC’s Board of Director’s this season. “You know the bureaucracy of committees and what it’s got to do, but I think there is getting to be a growing run at maybe doing that, and I think more coaches are in favor of it.”

Faster isn't going to improve the poor shooting.

Seems like a no brainer to go to 30. Speeds up the game and is easier math.

30 seconds would be fine but on the "list of things to improve in college basketball", better officiating would be at the top of the list and much more important than a 30 sec shot clock.

Well, it's easier to fix one Quicker, mallen.

Agree with Lover. The speed of the game is one of the last things wrong with CBB. If the refs would just call the block/charge correctly we would see an increase in at least 4-6 pts per team per game.

A 10 second shot clock wouldn't change the shots we take that much, it would just cut off the 25 seconds spent dribbling futilely around the perimeter and we could go straight to the desperation heave as soon as we get the ball into the front court.

Bad shooting in hoops doesn't get fixed by having less time to set up a play.

Try 24 for a season in college basketball and then make a decision.

I like it the way it is. There are more things that can be done to make the game better than shortening the shot clock.

why do you like the 35 sec shot clock?

I like the fact that CBB has so many contrasting styles. From slower teams like Wisconsin and Princeton to the uptempo teams like UNC. All you are doing if you lower the shot clock is giving the bigger, more talented teams an advantage.

I have never sat through a CBB game and thought the game would be better with a 24-sed shot clock. A lot of teams have trouble getting good shots as it is. So we're saying we want teams to get worse shots more often. Just seems shortsighted to me.

Guess I'm just not as big a fan of A&M's passing the ball around the perimeter for 25 of those 35 seconds.

People advocating the shorter shot clock AND baseball draft rules are indirectly contradicting themselves. Because you want to give the pure athletes some of the advantage back to make the game faster, but EVERY good athlete and talent will enter the draft after high school. So you'll be left with non-athletes trying to play a faster game. YAY!

Bingo Mikeyshooter! Less shot clock isn't going to help bad shooting teams shoot better. It'll get uglier if you as me.

CBB scoring is at its lowest level in 6 decades according to Pomeroy. Part of that has to do with pace, obviously fewer possessions will lead to fewer points. A lower shot clock will certainly speed up the pace but you have to look deeper than that. I would tend to blame physical defensive play and risk averse coaches more than just the shot clock.

Coaches are understandably risk averse. It's an attempt to save their gigantic salaries. They can control kids' defensive effort far more than an attempted jump shot. Defense is consistent. Not only that but the rules favor defense. CBB has gotten very physical. If they want to change something, they should start calling more bumps and hand checks.

I'm still in favor of the shorter clock regardless. It will at least force coaches, like Kennedy, to spend more time in practice working on offense. I'm afraid its still going to be ugly basketball though unless they cut down on the physical play.

Poor shooting is the problem. You don't improve that by speeding it up. If we saw low scoring but high fg% I'd agree but we see awful fg%. I think part of the problem is having zero mid range game and hardly any post game. The dominate big man is gone. It's all out beyond the three point line and sometimes beyond.

There's very little that can be accomplished in 35 seconds that can't be accomplished in 30. Teams will be forced to pick up the pace, slightly, which will improve the game over time.

But so many of our good shots came in that 30 to 35 second range. This change would be disastrous to our offense.
THE LOVER

Bad shooting is the problem. Fix that and you'll have plenty of offense even with a 40 sec shoot clock.
Method Man
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No. It's not the only problem. Offenses are geared towards shortening the game and it's boring.

Head coach: "Man we sucked at offense last year. How do we fix it?"
Assistant coach: "I don't know."
HC: "What do you mean, 'you don't know'? What am I paying you for?"
Asst: "Well we could just dribble the shot clock out and hope something good happens"
HC: "Works for me. Now let's get back to practicing handchecking."

Increase the number of possessions and teams that can score gain an even bigger advantage. This hopefully would shift the mindset of so many coaches who focus too heavily on defense. Offenses aren't suddenly bad because kids can't shoot anymore. It's a systematic problem that will only fix itself if those guys start losing.

Make dribbling illegal within the 3 point arc.
