Rick Barnes to UNC?

It makes sense. He has ACC ties (coached at Clemson). It is a basketball school, and he won't have to worry about a footbal scrimmage drawing 7000 more fans than an Elite 8 basketball game.
Would texas be willing to pony up the cash close to tresmack's salary just to keep a basketball coach?

Not going to happen. Even if Carolina was interested why would he leave Texas? He has built a great program and has a team of underclassmen and is bringing in great recruits the next two years. No way Carolina can pay as much as UT either. Not going to happen.

I agree ... no way.

Excellence comes first. Winning comes with Excellence.

I don't think UNC people like him very much. He got into it a few times with Dean Smith.

Rick Barnes to UNC has as much chance as Jackie Sherrill to Texas.

Roy williams is the guy that north Carolina seems to want. He's a UNC alum and he turned them down 3 years ago. I read in the NY Newsday today a little about this.

Right now williams is giving the customary "I've got a final 4 to concentrate on right now..." type responses...but he is not coming out with any denials...just like Fran was doing at Bama before he came to A&M.

roy williams will be the next UNC coach. They will pay him big bucks and he will go back to his alma matter.

its a shame all this has to come up during the final 4...this kind of a distraction is huge and could possibly **** up my chances of taking my pool. i have ut and ku in the final with ku winning it all...took alot of heat for picking ku to win it all and i'd like to see it happen so i can talk ___ to my friends.

I've fretted over keeping Barnes as well, especially with the UNC position opening up and Rick being from NC. UNC, like Notre Dame in football, is the promised land of hoops.

However, I think Barnes will stay:
1. He's going to get a very hefty hike in pay. Whether it is more than UNC can pay, I don't know
2. He's getting his entire starting line-up back next year. Win or lose this weekend, the table is set for next year, and we will likely be pre-season #1 (unless a young Syracuse squad wins it all on Monday).
3. The State of Texas is a recruiting hotbed, and he has a clear recruiting advantage right now. There's no Duke here in the Lone Star State.
4. Face it: Basketball expectations are lower here. We have no history of enormous hoops success. If he gets us to the championship game, he can stay forever. UNC fans expect that kind of performance year in and year out.

OldGeezer, don't worry about this one. Seriously, UNC views Barnes as The Anti-Christ because of his run-in with Dean Smith while Barnes was the coach at Clemson. They would never waste their time talking to RB. Their loss, of course.

Marathon, I don't recall that run-in with Smith. Fill me in.

I heard when names were initially floated, Dean Smith called the UNC AD and said take my name off the building if you even thinkg of hiring Barnes.

Seriously, when Barnes was at Clemson, he was well known for getting Technicals and complaining that UNC and Duke got all of the breaks. Barnes almost got into a fist fight with Dean Smith during a game in the ACC tournament one year. Most everyone associated witt UNC still look at Rick as the antichrist.

The big problem that Smith has with Barnes, is that he coached a rough slow style that was able to slow down the UNC team. The game where Smith wanted to whoop some a s s, was a game where Clemson committed some 40 fouls during the game, and Dean thought it was dirty.

OGH, the John Feirstein book had a bunch of stuff about all of that. What UT1999 said is correct.

It's interesting that Barnes coached up-tempo at Providence and Texas, with Clemson sandwiched in between. Also, he put Gabe's rear on the bench for dirty play.

you guys don't remember the game where Clemson had to finish playing with 4 players because everyone else on the team fouled out??

Barnes started to strip because he was going to go in to play.

Barnes dislikes UNC and the feeling is mutual.

I think Barnes is in a good position at UT right now and don't think he is going anywhere, however I would think he has to be disappointed with the fan support considering UT's level of play. Not dogging on UT because their fan support is infinitely better than ours, but lets face it this is Texas, no one really gives a **** about basketball.

Nice try aggies,

The guy isn't going anywhere. There's 10 reasons I can think of that haven't even been mentioned yet while he'll stay at Texas.

The prominent newspaper in the Research Triangle area listed Barnes only as the 7th most likely candidate, and the top 6 were way ahead of him on all accounts...

I mentioned it up above...If there is a big12 coach going to UNC it's going to be Roy Williams.

Barnes won't even be considered. Besides, UNC can get a better coach than him. He has already proven that he can't win consistently in the ACC.

Yeah, and everyone knows Clemson is such a basketball power. Please...Barnes won't be considered, but it's not because they can get a better coach.

The logic that Barnes won’t go to UNC b/c he has finally built the texas program into a national power is flawed. I thought Mack Brown would never leave UNC for texas for the same reason; why leave a winning program for another rebuilding job? The answer: money, and to go to a school where your program will be the main focus of all of the attention.
Texas is not a basketball school, and it never will be a basketball school. It will always be a football school first and foremost, and there is nothing wrong with that. Similarly, UNC will always be a basketball school, first and foremost, despite any success they may have in football. Barnes would leave for UNC if offered the right amount of money, b/c he wouldn’t have to worry about football scrimmages drawing 5 times as many fans as regular season basketball games there. He wouldn’t have to beg and plead and threaten fans to show up to fill the seats. At UNC, Barnes would be the top dog, and he knows. Now, whether or not that is enough to get him to leave texas, remains to be seen.

Once again, Barnes won't be considered. Barnes is a good coach, but not a great one. Also, Dean Smith will be involved with the process, and he hates Barnes. I think it will come from within the Dean Smith family, Brown, Williams or Karl. George Karl and Dean Smith are extremly tight, if Williams stays at KU (that's about 50-50 I'd say) then I think Karl gets the nod.

Typical whine...Barnes is better than a "good coach"...history will tell whether he's a great coach.

Gladiator91,
I guess by that exacting standard A&M has never had a good basketball coach, men's or women's, in its entire history. Worse, the prospects of landing one in the next decade are bleak, if winning the conference, going to the Final Four, and making the NCAAs at an 80% clip are the criteria for a good coach.
