The logic that Barnes won’t go to UNC b/c he has finally built the texas program into a national power is flawed. I thought Mack Brown would never leave UNC for texas for the same reason; why leave a winning program for another rebuilding job? The answer: money, and to go to a school where your program will be the main focus of all of the attention.
Texas is not a basketball school, and it never will be a basketball school. It will always be a football school first and foremost, and there is nothing wrong with that. Similarly, UNC will always be a basketball school, first and foremost, despite any success they may have in football. Barnes would leave for UNC if offered the right amount of money, b/c he wouldn’t have to worry about football scrimmages drawing 5 times as many fans as regular season basketball games there. He wouldn’t have to beg and plead and threaten fans to show up to fill the seats. At UNC, Barnes would be the top dog, and he knows. Now, whether or not that is enough to get him to leave texas, remains to be seen.
