and he is wrong. 9-7 in our conference gets you. Throw in a big win over Notre Dame and they are deserving.

not to mention as an 11 seed there are at least 4 other teams that the committee thought were less deserving than Baylor.

Why are people concerned about Arizona State? Their atrocious RPI means one thing, they have done nothing to merit being in the NCAA tournament.

Baylor has a better resume IMO

Had a better season that Arizona and Oregon (both got invited)... Beat Stanford, USC and Xavier.

The reasoning was that they had a low strength of schedule, yet many believed that the Pac-10 was one of the top three conferences in the nation.

I see it like this... If two teams below you made it, then you should too!

The committee obviously disagrees with Vitale.

O'Connor: On Baylor getting in as a No. 11: "It wasn't close. They did it all on the court."

Did what? Lost to Colorado to secure their spot in the dance?

I don't see how you keep a transcendent player like Lomers out of the Dance. He was born to play March basketball.

Baylor should be in, and Arizona should not be in the Dance.

Next matter of business, please.

Honestly, Arizona State should be in, but one of those mid-majors should have been cut not baylor. This year, baylor probably deserved to be in it before us.

Scott Van Pelt and Doug Gottlieb yesterday on ESPN radio were talking about how ASU should have gotten in over a school like Kentucky. They wouldn't go as far as to say that Kentucky should not be in...but they said looking at their tournament resume's special exceptions shouldn't be made for schools "just because of who they are, or aren't"

I gotta say, I agree

Baylor did not deserve the invite.
Arizona did not either.
Arizona State, however, did, and got jobbed. If Georgia lost their game to Miss. St., I think Arizona State would have gotten in.

This plays more to Arizona not being deserving of a bid than Arizona State deserving one.

If Arizona doesn't deserve their bid, then who do you give it to?

i think Dickie V is hung up on the fact that bu was the last one announced which combined with a relatively low seed gives sort of the appearance that they were the last ones in. sounds like his argument was more focused on ASU should be in vs. bu specifically shouldn't.

if we were in the ACC with the exact resume, dick would be clamoring that we should be a 5 seed.

I'm glad Baylor is in. Our conference deserved that respect, and Baylor is the kind of team that can give anyone fits.

Vitale says Baylor shouldn't be in, and one of the CBS Sportsline guys sees them going to the Elite 8.

Digger went on an extended argument about how Baylor did not deserve to be in. Followed that 30 minutes later by saying "Of course, Baylor over Purdue."

Baylor deserves to be in. I think B12 basketball, other than Kansas and tu, doesn't get anywhere near the respect it deserves.

I guess I believe that when there is such a signficant difference among the RPI of bubble schools, like ASU (#83, below even Houston), Arizona (#38), and Oregon (#58), who all come from the same conference, that it would be extremely unfair to leave out the teams with the signficantly better RPIs and allow the team in with the significantly worse RPI.

I'm still waiting to hear some SEC bashing from the media. Baylor deserved to be in.

The SEC should be getting the grief from the ACC lovers. Georgia is an obvious, but I'm still shocked that Miss St is an 8th seed. That is the worst seed in this tournament.

They lost EVERY Non con game against a decent to good opponent and got 10 conference wins against Alabama, Auburn, LSU, South Carolina & splitting games with Ole Miss & Georgia. They lost every game against a ranked team as well.

It's a crock of shat.

Rome had Packer on this morning and he gave some interesting insight. Basically, the whole tournament bracket is created by a computer program and conference strength is not reflected anywhere in there, so the whole conference RPI is meaningless. Which makes sense when you see Miss State's seed.

I can agree with a little with this.......think about this. What if in that 5OT game here at A&M the tables had turned and we won the game? Baylor may have gotten very little national spotlight, an 8-8 conference record, and then a loss to Colorado in the first round.......you can argubly say they are out. I truley beleive that our game with them got them into the tournament. If they lost here at Reed, I don't think they are dancing.

Compare the percentage of each conference in vs. conference RPI strength. I think you will see the higher rpi conferences will get more teams in. Now not sure how seeding is refected.

Straight from the horses mouth, Billy Packer brought this up with the selection committee's chairman. Conference RPI is not reflected in any of the process. They have formulas that help avoid matching up teams from the same conference in the first 2 rounds, but that's it.

He was making an issue of it and telling the committee chairman that it needs to factor in and the only response was that it isn't at this time.

The ACC with 4 teams & the #1 rating & Miss St with ZERO good wins, but helping prop the SEC up because of 12 conf wins, are case in point.

here's what i dont get

a team like south alabama, that plays in the freaking sun belt(#15 ranked conference by rpi), had an sos of 127 and their only wins over tournament teams were against mississippi state, san diego and western kentucky(none seeded higher than 8) and they were a ten seed?

arizona state plays in the arguably the toughest conference in the country, had wins over xavier, arizona(twice), oregon, usc and stanford(2 3 seeds, a 6, 9, and a 10 seed) and still isn't getting in?

why is it that small conference teams are getting away with playing weak schedules while the big ones are getting railed for it? the committee has fallen in love with mid major teams way too much this year. it should be about who you beat, not just who you played.
Syd_X_Barrett
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I should say, to some extent, I'm glad it's not a factor because I think those rankings can be bullshat like any other.

Again, look at the SEC, outside of Tenn & Ole Miss (who's biggest non con win was Clemson) the other SEC teams SUCKED in non con. Again, Miss St lost to EVERY at least decent team they played.

I think if they made conference RPI factor in you'd see more of what has happened to college football where most teams play weak non con games and then use their conference games to prop up the entire league ala the SEC in football.
Syd_X_Barrett

Because South Alabama is 24-6 and beat the most overrated team in the country who also won a lot of games against bad teams.

Wins and Losses are still biggest determining factor in seeding.

However, South Alabama was 9-5 in road/neutral games, as compared to Arizona State's 6-8. In fact, Arizona State was blown out by a bad Illinois team (#103 RPI) and got beat by 15 on the road at Nebraska (#95 RPI). In addition, ASU got beat at home in Pac-10 play by a couple of sub-par teams (like Washington #121 RPI and Cal #92 RPI).

Whereas, South Alabama lost all but one of its games on the road (and was in each game), as they lost by 3 on the road to Ole' Miss (#48 RPI), lost by 5 on the road to Miami, Ohio (#73 RPI), lost by 3 on the road to Vandy in 2 OTs (#12 RPI), lost by 2 on the road to North Texas (#142 RPI), and lost by 6 on the road to Mid. Tenn. (#110 RPI).
