I just didn't like the argument that they played UNC close.

They didn't beat a ranked team at all during the year and lost to Miami on their home floor.

Could you say that putting Miami in screwed Va Tech? Yes. Apparently Miami beating Duke is better than having one addition conference win and going further in the conference tourney.

Arizona State, Syracuse, Dayton, MIssissippi all have more of an argument than VT.

They finished ahead of Miami in the league and beat them handily in the tournament. Miami got in and VT didn't. How do you square that up?

Miami beat VT earlier in the year and also beat Clemson and Duke. VTs only great win is just the Miami win.
Miami was a lock before the conference tourney. They were riding their nonconference scheule which was ok, but they won all but 1 so that helps a lot.
I think Miami is overrated.

I literally have heard NOTHING about Miami the entire year. The only time i remember seeing them play briefly was against Duke. However, I can probably say the same for VT. I didn't hear much about them until the ACC tournament.

VT had a fairly low RPI and SOS. And no great wins.

Have some pity on Seth Greenberg. He had just been beaten by Carolina on a last second shot. And he was referring to the total field when he mentioned being in the "best 65 teams".

Va Tech's overall record at 19-13 is better than Arizona (who made the tournament) at 19-14. Granted everyone thinks the PAC 10 is better than the ACC, but the ACC is still an extremely competitive league. They had a pretty respectable year in the ACC, with their only really bad loss on the road at NC St. I don't blame Seth Greenberg for having confidence in his team and thinking that they're deserving of a tourney berth.

Virginia Tech wasn't even one of the last teams considered, I'd bet. They had 13 losses, 3 of them bad, and no good wins. Illinois State, Syracuse, Ohio State, and Creighton all probably go in before VT and Arizona State was easily in before VT.

vt tech is a no 1 seed in the nit. so yes, they were probably one of the last 4 out.

I do think Miami deserved to get into the NCAA's based upon what they did during the year but for them to be a 6 seed is way too high in my opinion. I guess beating Duke at home & Clemson got them this seed but I just don't see them being that high.

Greenberg and Knight are absolutely correct. The NCAA should be based on a simple meritocracy where the best 64 teams get in, not affirmative action where bad teams get in over more deserving teams. It's shameful that a 20-loss Coppin State got in over VT, who would blow them out.

Blah - 34 teams is enough to figure out the national champ. The others are in there for fun and to pull out the occasional monumental upset that makes this tourney so great.

You can't make an argument for making the tourney based on close losses.
