Here’s a brief scouting report on the Aggies: we are a lock-down, mid-court, man-to-man team. You won’t see a full court press period and seeing a zone defense is very doubtful. Our defense is our strength, and even during our losing streaks, we consistently held teams well under 70 points.
Our offense can be described as bi-polar at best. When they are on, we dominate in the paint and complement it with good jumpers. When they are off…we score 10 points in the half to Oklahoma. The problem lies in a couple of different areas: new coach implementing a more complex motion offense, lose of all-world point Acie Law (Aggie’s highest draft pick ever), and lack of a true point to run the offense. The offense played well (with a couple exceptions) in the Big 12 tourney, so hopefully they’ll be clicking in LA.
Players:
Frontcourt: called by some the preseason best frontcourt in the nation, haven’t quite lived up to the hype, but still very good. Starters will be Jones and either Davis or Jordan.
-Joe Jones: Senior, 6’9”, 260, beast. Senior year hasn’t been quite as good as previous, but still a force in the paint who can push big guys around with ease (when the refs don’t call a super-tight game).
-Bryan Davis: Sophomore, 6’9”. Having a great year and establishing himself as the team leader. Huge hustle player with a good mid-range shot.
-DeAndre Jordan: Freshman, 7’. Kind of a disappointment this year. The kid is VERY raw and is still a long way from developing a solid post game. That said, he will be a top 5 pick in the draft this year, can jump through the roof and will have some dunks that make you say wow. Was sick during the Big 12 tourney.
Backcourt: ah, the backcourt. Source of pain, anguish and, when they play well, joy. All are good defenders…
-Dominique Kirk, Senior SG (but co-PG). Started every game for A&M all 4 years; our glue-guy. One of the top defenders in the Big 12 all 4 years. Can be unselfish to a fault, but can hit lights out when he wants too (which isn’t enough).
-Donald Sloan, Sophomore SG (typically runs the point). Unfortunately, Sloan is having to play the wrong position because of lack of a PG. Very strong, very competitive, ugly shot, can turn into a turnover machine. You’ll get 100% effort out of him every night, but what that effort will bring differs each game.
-Josh Carter, Junior, SF. Josh is without a doubt the most frustrating player on our team. Leading 3-point shooter in the nation last year (with Acie running the point), will either score 24 points…or 4. Has trouble creating his own shot and is a bit timid going inside (even though he is good at it). If a confident, well-playing Carter shows up, you guys (and UCLA) are in for a long game. If not, see the Kansas game in the Big 12 semi’s where the rest of the team played GREAT, but we lost by 6 while Josh was 1-8.
