That shot wouldn't count. It is a pass to yourself which is illegal. There was no "ligitimate" shot attempt

Well, what happened Wednesday night? I didn't notice because of all the excitement. Did they ultimately count that final dunk or not?

Yes.

No point repeating nonsense. Of course you can purposefully throw the ball off the glass, rebound, and then shoot. Just like you can purposefully throw it off the back of a guy and then shoot.

Once a ball hits the backboard it is a shot attempt and any player on the court may rebound it.

You can't catch your own air ball, but throwing it off the backboard is fine.

Not known by probably most, but you CAN catch your own airball in college if it's deemed a legitimate shot attempt. The NBA is the only league where it's not allowed.

If you happen to be playing in the NBA. In college you may not unless the original shot was a "tip" attempt.

I stand corrected - they actually removed the requirement that the ball first hit the floor in 2004 in college ball. Sorry Aston.

check my link. Plus, the IM rules at A&M I reffed under were the same as college rules. You can catch it if a legit shot.

Guys would always scream for a travel when I'd ref IM games when this would happen.

You have it backwards, the NBA doesn't allow it.

please. this quote was taken out of context. original question was if sloan was counted for a shot attempt, rebound, assist, dunk. that statement was regarding the off the glass if it counted as a shot attempt.

this the quoted statement above.

>>Once a ball hits the backboard it is a shot attempt<<

That's not true. A pass could be deflected off (or just hit) the board and not be a try. A try implies the player is attempting to score. However, in this case, the try definition also includes a dunk attempt, so if you take the whole picture, he was attempting a dunk. Since it was a try, there was no traveling.

If you don't come back down you can catch your own airball.

For example, let's say that a player is going in for a dunk. As he takes his first step he lobs the ball up towards the rim, then jumps off of his second stop, grabs the ball and jams it home.

I guess it could be construed as a pass to yourself, or really nothing because you essentially still had the ball with your two steps, it just wasn't in your possession.

You are all wrong it counted as 10,002 points. 2 for the score board and another 10,000 for the record breaking croud so they can take home and cry about it. well maybe not the whole 10,000 some were ags but they can take em home as a souvenir.

Even more importantly than the 2 points on the scoreboard is the one point on the "Hustle Board" that he got for getting the offensive rebound. That's something new I heard the selection committee is looking at now, the all-important hustle stats.

wait does he get the 2 points 1 assist to himself and 1 offensive rebound?

Wait!!! He was outside the arc when he threw it up and his feet did not touch the ground when he grabbed the ball and slammed it.

I have know idea, but my first thoughts would say that he ended up 1 for 2, with 2 points, and a rebound...? But I am drunk so don't homd me to it!

I had this issue when I played intramurals at A&M and it was during the championship in summer league 3 on 3, so I was pretty pissed.

Everyone talking about whether or not it is considered a "shot" is correct though. The problem in my situation was that the ball slipped out of the guys hands, he took a few steps and caught it. That's a damn travel, not a shot attempt, so that was a doofus call.
