Just curious if anyone ever gets them? Where? Price?

Wondering if it's worth looking into bc they are starting to get a little nuts at the restaurants.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I've done it a few times. You can get an oyster knife off of amazon for under $10. And there's a bunch of instructional videos on YouTube. You won't confuse me for a shucker at Acme, but it's not too hard to get the hang of it. The Randall's by my house typically keeps them in stock for about $1/each.

And I should add, I haven't pulled the trigger on eating them raw. I typically grill them.

Also interested in this. There seems to be a lot of online merchants that will ship them to your house, probably better quality than the grocery store unless it's Whole Foods or central market, but I haven't pulled the trigger.

Would most be interested in raw and it would be a special occasion.

Was looking at this just a few minutes ago, gold belly should have some, I just don't trust the shipping companies down here.

I've used this company a couple times this year and have been happy with the product. They have a 100 count sampler for $99.

If you are near Central Market they have some great East Coast Oysters for $1.50 per. They do go on sale quite often for $1 per.

Whole Foods has $0.99 oysters on Fridays, including a bunch of varieties of cold water East Coast oysters. Totally worthwhile.

We used to rake them off the beds in Seadrift. Not hard to shuck at all

We used to get them from the farm patch (?) or something like that in Bryan when I was a senior. We tried the tool and ended up using a screw driver because it was impossible to crack them. These were just gulf oysters and now we prefer the smaller sweeter ones from up north so I'm sure they are easier to open. The

Did this a month ago. Bought 20 for $20. Ate most of them raw, 3 different types. Broiled a few gulf coasts in butter and parm. Great dinner.

I buy them by the boat sack down in Corpus a few times a year and have people over to help eat and shuck them. Usually pay around $100 for a sack. Shucking them is easy enough once you get the hang of it.

HEB in Bryan had three varieties this week: Malpeque, Bluepoint and Wellfleet. I bought 4 each, shucked them and they were fantastic. Perfectly fresh. $1.25 each.

The rather knowledgeable kid working there said they were gauging interest to see if they should get in more. I told him "Yes please."

Can someone link the tools needed to shuck at home?

You just need a shucking knife and a glove. I use the yellow fish cleaning gloves at academy and the Bubba shucking knife. Toadfish outfitters makes a set as well

Thank you.

I got some bluepoint and a bag of gulf coast at the HEB on Welbourn. Will eat them this evening.

Update.

Blue points were great.

Gulf coast ok. A couple of them were pretty small.

First time buying oysters. I want to put them on the smoker.

Thinking garlic, Parm, butter mix.

Any other tips or tricks?

They must have gone quickly because I was at HEB on Saturday and they were out of live oysters. I would LOVE for HEB to start carrying more varieties consistently.

Just call the HEB in the morning and tell them to transfer you to the seafood department and check what they have in stock.

That's what I did. The guy recommended I get there ASAP bc he said one person could wipe out all the blue points at any time.

Put them in a cooler with ice and keep it open. I did not shuck and eat them until late afternoon.

If you have a central market near you they will have far more variety. You can even use their app to see what they have that week.

Go easy on the cheese, and add a little parsley.

You can run them fairly hot. I put them on without shucking them, cup side toward the heat. As soon as the shells pop open, remove the top shell, add a small dollop of your butter mix, and pull them off as soon as it melts.

Would your cousin Bill let Alex come down and help harvest or tend to oysters and make a video like the one I posted above? We love hands on learning adventures.
