Costco clearly #1

People keep telling me spec's whiskey pecan pie is really good, but I just don't believe it'll hold a candle to Costco's

Others say Spec's is trash

Which do you go for

I like the Spec's pecan bourbon pie, done a few over the years. Never tried the Costco pies, their pies are typically double normal pie size, and we just don't eat that much sweets. You sound pretty fired up about the Costco pies, so interested in details, might be good to grab one for a family get together.

I make a pretty good pecan pie. Making crust isn't near as hard as people make it out to be. I do a standard pecan pie, no chocolate, bourbon, etc. I've enjoyed those other types, but the pecans really shine in a standard one.

That being said, I have also had some good store pecan pie. Believe my parents were gifted a pecan pie every year from some Texas company that was pretty tasty. Most pecan pie I find to be too sweet and imbalanced.

Everyone should make a homemade pecan pie at least once. It's simple.

I would gladly try a Costco pecan pie but since very few in my wife's family are pecan pie fans we don't need one that big and she makes a great one. Last year she added coconut to the filling on a whim and it was fantastic. Pecan pie and ice cream is about as good as it gets when it comes to dessert.

It's not bourbon. It's freaking crown Royal.

Blah, I think you're right. They're still pretty tasty! I do want to try the Costco version.

I agree. Specs has a trash pecan pie.

I saw it on commercials during the A&M game last Saturday and it looked like dried ****

Goode Co pecan pie is hands down the best I've ever had.

Haven't had the Costco. Tried the spec a few years ago. It was okay/good. Not a big pecan pie critic. Haven't been too inclined to buy another in the last few years.

I use the Sugar Spun Run Pecan Pie Recipe and add a tsp of praline pecan liqueur. I'm sure the Goode Co pie makes a nice gift, but I couldn't bring myself to spend $45 on a pie that's not even fresh. Pecan pie is one of the easiest desserts you can make.

For those in Austin or just stopping through. Try the Blondie at Jack Allen's. Technically not a pecan pie but in the same wheelhouse. You'll thank me later btw.

Not to completely derail a thread about pecan pie but since Costco was referenced I just wanted to drop this in here because in addition to making a pecan pie for Thanksgiving my wife bought the Maple Butter Pecan Cake from Costco and it was incredible. The best dessert I've had in quite a while. If your local Costco has these then purchase one at your own risk. They have them with the refrigerated cakes next to the bakery.

My favorite recipe for pecan pie comes from a Houston Junior League cookbook one of my aunts gave to me years ago. I like it because it doesn't use any corn syrup.

Southern Pecan Pie
1 unbaked 9" pie shell
1 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup white sugar
1 T flour
2 eggs
2 T milk
1 t vanilla extract
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 cup pecans

Preheat oven to 375 dF. Mix the sugars and flour together. Add eggs, milk, vanilla, and melted butter, and mix well. Fold in pecans. Pour into the pie shell, and bake for 40-50 minutes.

Historically pecan pie has not been at the top of my list to eat so I'm certainly no connoisseur, but the Costco version is pretty damn good!

Those Costco pecan pies, or any of their pies, are great for feeding a dozen people. For 2-4, they're not so great.

I put 3/4 of mine in the freezer. Fun fact you can eat them right out of the freezer too!

The costco pie is good but I also find it overtly sweet. Need to take down the sugar level and it would be perfect.

You can buy it from their BBQ joint too. This is the best store bought pecan pie I've ever had.

If you're in BCS, Readfields is pretty darn hard to beat. Their other pies are amazing too.

This Oxbow Bakery pecan pie made the cover of Southern Living & it's delicious. They are a small family run bakery in Palestine TX. Aggie owned. Highly recommend - open Thursday-Saturday 10-3 & they sell out early if you're coming to pick one up.

Pecan pie is fairly easy, but I find that too few recipes include the detail that makes it nearly foolproof:

Use an instant read thermometer, and pull it when the temp in the center hits 200. The amount of sugar makes it need a higher temp to set than other custard pies.
