Rather than toss it after use I want use it for dog food and a pumpkin pie. But it had a scented candle in to for about an hour. What do you think? Is it safe or will the food taste off?

Well…you sounded taller on radio.

Sounds like your experiment went well and you could make pie.
Also, you might try pumpkin butter - great on pancakes.

When did you carve it?

Either way, I'd probably just choose to use smaller pie pumpkins for the pies.

Pie pumpkins should be on sale everywhere now. I wouldn't cook one you carved and set out.

Yep not worth it. Jack O Lantern pumpkins have less flesh compared to pie pumpkins (proportionate to their size) and are less sweet.

Additionally, when you carve the pumpkin and expose the watery flesh, its shelf life goes downhill immediately. Within hours, you have flies, other bugs, squirrels, etc. all over it. Not something I want to roast and eat.

Roast the pieces you cut immediately if you must, but discard the rest after the holiday. Or if you're like me, procrastinate until it's rotting and gross and then wish you had a hazmat suit to dispose of it.

Anyway, I love roasting pie pumpkins, but practically speaking, butternut squash looks and tastes very similar and gives you more edible squash for your money.

I just toss it in the yard for the squirrels to finish off but I live in an old hood with less than perfectly manicured lawns.

Also, you will probably need to cook it down or strain it after you roast and puree. Fresh pumpkin has a lot more water than canned.

mine go into the compost bin or my parents come pick them up to feed to their chickens.

ours were already fly/gnat infested after less than 12 hours. zero chance i'd ever use a jack o lantern for anything i was eating.

I've got a pumpkin that's been sitting outside that I didn't carve. Next week I'm saving the seeds and tossing the rest.
