Yeah. They could do that back then. In 2024, not so much.

MRE is the preferred method to satisfy a soldier's needs on patrol. Other than that, we eat in a FOB,COP, patrol base or in a Company AA.

Could you imagine 20 camp fires going on and soldiers cooking food on the modern battlefield? Enemy ISR and scouts would sniff that out quick. Revolutionary War and Civil War, that was possible because of battles were fought. Endless days of marching, heck of a lot easier to maintain your weapon because of how simple the mechanics were, and the opposing side's officers were in constant communication for when battle was going to happen and where.

War is not as cordial anymore. So MRE on the move or dinner back at the fob it is.
