Got an Australian and Indian friend/colleague visiting. What's something that's unique that they should get before leaving the US? Also, I'm in Southern California, not Texas, so can't do real Tex-Mex or Texas BBQ.

I was thinking Cali-Mex : Maybe not as good as Tex-Mex, but decent alternative. Maybe some California burritos or fish tacos. Lots of ethnic varieties of stuff here. Maybe some good Vietnamese place.

SoCal has a ton a good Asian places. id take em to a dim sum place. You can definitely find good Mexican food. Maybe a upscale steakhouse And (I know, I know) In N Out

When I was serving with the Kiwis overseas, I had one ****, who couldn't get enough of Texas.

Apparently, him and a bus full of people from New Zealand got a bus and toured the whole country. They spent two days in Texas and loved the BBQ, hospitality, went to a honky Tonk and the music.

I would give him some Texas Brisket followed by Tex-Mex. Experiencing the culture and vibe out and about would be even better for that Aussie.

That's what I was gonna say. I've had some good Texas BBQ in Southern California. Don't write it off completely. And you've got to do Mexican.

Australia has a large number of Vietnamese people. I guarantee they don't have our Mexicans though.

Good point. They are essentially vegetarian if halal isn't available. But seems as though lots of halal places in this area. Even of various other ethnic cuisines.

I was gonna suggest grilled Tri-tip as that seems to be a west coast thing. But that whole vegan thing kind of blows that out of the water.

Kansas City BBQ, Born & Raised and Truluck's in San Diego

Take them to a Padres game and feed them ballpark food. Hotdogs, nachos, etc. Gaslamp district and find some hole in the wall there.

*assuming by southern Cal, you are talking about San Diego. If LA or thereabouts, I have zero knowledge.

When I was in the Marines at Coronado had few places for fish tacos.
