High quality olive oil?

Anyone have any recommendations for a high quality olive oil that comes from a reputable source that I know won't be adulterated and is healthy, and good for eating without cooking?

Was looking at California Olive Ranch, but the only bottles on the shelf were 10% from California, and the rest from multiple countries. Seems many olive oils are blends from multiple countries. Some of those countries have a reputation for adultering the oil.

Saica Castelvetrano Oil

They sell it at Jimmy's Food Store in Dallas, and I imagine it would be at the authentic Italian grocery store in most big cities.

Or you can order online, I found it here: https://www.diabruzzomarket.com/items/saica-castelvetrano-extra-virgin-olive-oil-17-oz

This Costco Olive Oil is supposed to be one of the highest quality on the market. Don't buy the organic one... Its sourced from multiple countries! The regular one is 100% sourced from Italy and has a quality stamp.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't realize Texas had so many options for native grown olive oils. I'm assuming they taste pretty good? High quality EVOO? Mainly trying to add healthy fats into my diet.

Unfortunately I live in Virginia at the moment, but will be in Texas in a couple months. So might try to pick some up locally when I'm there.

We order a couple of liters from a winery in Montalcino with our Brunello shipment.

This one from HEB supposed to be 100% Italian as well and is pretty good. We use it once the other is gone.

For those of y'all recommending Italian olive oil, are you aware of the Italian Mafia's adultering olive oil with other oils?

though it also states in the CNN article the following, so maybe we're more safe?
Quote:

According to the North American Olive Oil Association, it's highly unlikely bogus olive oil products would go on sale in the US, with research by the Food and Drug Administration finding no adulteration in samples tested.

"In reality, US consumers should have a high level of confidence in the quality and authenticity of the olive oil they buy," said Joseph R. Profaci, the NAOOA's executive director.

Which winery? It's been a lifetime since I've been to Montalcino. I need to go back.

Capanna. I also need to get back to Montalcino. A day on the square drinking Campari spritzes in Siena is also in order.

Saw one of those conspiracy-type Facebook reels talking about olive oil recently. Didn't realize fake oil was even a thing. They said something like there aren't enough olive trees in the world to support all the bottles on the shelves and most of what you see isn't legit. All they said was to look for organic oils from one place, not a bunch like most say.

Might be a bunch of crap but the one that fit the bill at Walmart was cheaper than all the other ones so I grabbed it.

The quality of Italian olive oil blows away that of anything produced here in Texas or in California. Just have to know where you're buying it from.

i watched another youtube about this not long ago. the consensus seems to be there is not much fake olive oil in the US. but, most of it is still a far cry from true "extra virgin" olive oil. they are still blending non-extra virgin olive oil in to boost profit margins.

Did an olive oil tasting with the Missus at Kiler Ridge in Paso Robles. Highly recommend. Got to try multiple varietals. But damn, talk about delicious EVOO (all are COOC certified). Crazy how different and better the quality oils are over the stuff we buy in stores. And how the different varietals were really quite different with different applications.

The highlight was being served some homemade vanilla ice cream with some of their EVOO drizzled over the top along with a pinch of sea salt (I believe the oil we chose was their Nocellara del Belice). Delicious!

My understanding is that modern processing technique with centrifuges doesn't lend itself to true "extra virgin" olive oil. That first greenish batch coming fresh out of it is still high $.

HEB sells one called Rustico. It is unfiltered and cold pressed. Still has whisps of greenish matter from processing that makes it taste absolutely fantastic for salad dressings and such. Kirkland for everyday use.

So, I bought some Texas Olive Ranch recently while visiting Texas. Pretty disappointed.

For one, it's not 100% Texas olive oil. It's a blend of Texas and Argentine oil. Also, it's pretty mellow compared to some Italian stuff I bought. Which may not be a bad thing if that's what you prefer. But I prefer not to have blends of oils. Doesn't taste bad though. Mainly having it for health purposes.

Funny story. Wife and I went to the wedding of a friend of hers in Spain (Spanish natural). Wife speaks Spanish but me, not so much. We get seated at the "English table" and the guy next to me is Spanish but wanted to work on his English. Turns out, he is an olive oil exporter.

We chatted about Spanish versus Italian or Greek and where he sold. Then I asked about US. Man he got riled. Apparently, at least at the time (about 1998), the FDA requirements for import/sale in the US degraded all olive oil served here. At the end, he says "your oils are all PROSTITUTED". Clearly meant adulterated but it was hilarious at the time and 25 years later we still say prostituted oil when shopping domestically.

The next day he had two gallon jugs dropped at our hotel for us. Unbelievable. We made it last as long as we could. If it's not cloudy and green (cloudiness never settles), it is NOT EV. It's prostituted.

It all depends on what you are using it for.

For cooking, you want a mellow oil that doesn't have a lot of flavor so it doesn't alter the food any. Salad dressings you want a much more robust flavor, dipping for bread you generally want a more buttery and medium flavor that doesn't overpower the bread but accentuates it.

I also think olive oil is one of those things that people assume must be better from Italy or wherever and have a preconcieved bias that anything not from there is just not as good.
