Picked up some split breasts from heb and one had a hard fibrous green growth inside. I thought was some type of chicken cancer. Apparently it isn't and it's somewhat common. Anyone ever seen this before?

Haven't seen that but I've all but sworn off buying boneless breasts. I've gotten multiple packs of "woody" chicken. Stuff ends up with the texture of raw/rubbery chicken when cooked. It's awful.

Crazy, never heard of that. You should post that on the outdoor board.

Oddly enough it had no odor at all.

That's great to see right before I start cooking some chicken breast.

I bought a pack of cilantro lime marinated chicken breast from HEB last weekend and grilled it. 2 of the 3 breasts in the package had that same weird rubbery texture you describe. It looked fine, but it was inedible.

That happened to us as well about a year ago with pre marinated chicken from Granzins. I took a bite of it and the texture immediately grossed me out because it felt raw and yet rubbery at the same time. We haven't been able to buy it since then. The picture above is enough to send me into an anti chicken mode for months.

had the same thing happen on some premarinated fajita-style chicken breasts. didn't realize what had happened at the time. the texture was horrible.

to clarify: not the green issue, but the raw/rubbery one

I don't buy the pre-marinated stuff but that would make it harder to know if you were buying the rubbery breasts. Photo below shows what to look for with raw breasts if you go that route.

I haven't run into the issue on whole birds, just the packs of boneless/skinless. I rarely buy anything but whole birds but I am a sucker for cheap meat (thatswhatshesaid protected!) and I think the last two times I bought boneless/skinless I threw several breasts out after cooking. Look for white striping in the muscle and yellowish color that isn't fat.

Edited crappy link, no issue on my PC but it definitely was awful on the phone

That link gave my phone AIDS. Don't click it.
