I'm looking for suggestions for cookbooks for pies, cookies, cakes or desserts in general. What are some favorites that you turn to?

The Pastry Queen and Baking with Julia are two good ones. Sugarspunrun is a really good website. Call it the Serious Eats of dessert

I really like The Fearless Baker and The Book on Pie both by Erin Jeanne McDowell.

And Southern Pies: A Gracious Plenty of Pie Recipes by Nancie McDermott.

My most used websites are Sally's Baking Addiction and The Cozy Plum.

Claire Saffitz!

Dessert Person is her first and has some pretty challenging recipes. What's For Dessert is her second and is more approachable.

She's a great writer and the recipes are delicious. She also has this chart in the front of both books which I think is an amazing resource every cook book should have.

Just in case the photo doesn't work, it's a matrix of all recipes in the book plotted on a x-axis of time to complete and a y axis of difficulty.

Since she works for Serious Eats a lot of her job is figuring out how to do things better than standard recipes and cooking techniques. She has a good number of recipes on the Serious Eats website as well as videos on YouTube. Here's a link to some cookies I made that are based on a bakery in NYC. They are huge cookies and awesome in flavor. I substituted pecans for the walnuts because pecans are way more flavorful in my opinion. They were a huge hit at my house.

It's a solid book, it might be the only dessert cookbook that I've personally purchased. I've made a number of the desserts in the book and haven't been disappointed.

If you want cake, you can't go wrong with Layered.
