A few years ago, H-E-B had popcorn chicken that was amazing. It wasn't too bland or too spicy. It had a little bit of spiciness to give it flavor. Then, inexplicably, they discontinued it. I was sorta bummed out. None of the name brands made anything comparable.

Recently, H-E-B brought it back. Sort of They now have a regular version that is as bland as baby food. It's awful. They also now have a spicy version that seems to use the same seasoning as the old version I liked, but wayyy more of it. It's almost too spicy.

Cooks out there: is there anything I can do to the currently frozen spicy chicken to make it a little less spicy?

Not a good cook but I have terrible ideas that sometimes work...so here's one for you. Buy a bag of bland and a bag of spicy, mix the 2 together. Then heat as needed and it'll balance it all out, right?

I regularly get/eat the Costco 'Bare" brand nuggets (highly recommend them!) and use this as seasoning to make them spicy:

Its got a nice amount of spice without being too salty (IMO). Not salt free, but it's not like dumping Tony's on them.

Make it into mashed potato bowls. A la KFC style. Stupid easy and very tasty and should knock back some of the flavor profile.

How spicy can they really be?

The cooking board debates prepackaged frozen fried chicken. Yikes.

With what? I'm not a cook. I compared the ingredient list on the bland vs the spicy. It just said "Spices" on the spicy.

It's just frustrating to find a product you like and that seems to sell well only for it to be discontinued or reformulated.

Jolly Rancher Cinnamon fire is another product that inexplicably was discontinued.

This board isn't as bad as it used to be. A few years ago, if you weren't one of the four posters in the food board clique, you weren't allowed to post recipes.

I think it's pretty clear. Use spices.

To answer your question, season them with whatever you want. Bland popcorn chicken is a blank slate to which you can paint your masterpiece. What type of flavor do you want?

Wing-style? If you don't feel confident enough to make some, grab an off the shelf wing sauce and toss them in it when you take them out of the oven.

Mexican? Chili powder, cumin, oregano

Chinese? Lao Gan Ma Chili Crisp (that sounds good) OR 5-spice then drizzled with honey.

Greek? Thyme, Rosemary, Oregano

ACTUAL POPCORN FLAVOR - Melted butter and salt (don't do this, it's a joke. Although I'd probably eat it)

BBQ? - Pepper, garlic powder, brown sugar OR just sweet baby ray's tossed then put it back in the oven for a minute or two.

Please note I'm not adding salt as there's probably enough sodium already.
