The wife's abuela had her recipe, and it involved zero potatoes. WTF? Recipes go all over the place with potatoes, carrots, peas, tomatoes, tomato sauce, onions, ..........and even.......RAISINS. I like mine with potatoes, onions, a few fresh tomatoes, and some kick from serranos or jalapeos.

Potatoes, Onion, fresh chopped tomato, green bell, garlic, salt, pepper, cumin, mex oregano.

If I'm making empanadas, I'll add olives, capers, and cilantro

Most Latin cultures have a picadillo, and it varies greatly depending on where you are.

Great timing. I was just making our menu for the week, and put Picadillo on it. It was either that or Gallo Pinto.

Ya'll post a recipe and I'll post pics/reviews.

Picadillo is a regular in our rotation! Here is the recipe I use:

1 large chopped onion
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tomato, chopped
1 jalapeo, finely chopped
1/2 RBP pepper, finely chopped
cilantro
1-1/2 lb ground beef
4 oz 1/2 can tomato sauce
Salt & pepper
cumin
1-2 bay leaf
2 tbsp alcaparrado or green olives

I use my lodge cast iron dutch oven to brown the meat, saut the onions and peppers, then add all other ingredients + 1/4 cup of water and let simmer on low for about an hour. I also add a tablespoon of the olive juice into the pot for extra flavor. Serve over white rice or with flour tortillas!

I may give this a try today.

Since popping into the grocery store isn't exactly simple these days, I may try with a can of rotel instead of the fresh ingredients.

And potato. It should have potatoes.

Yes it should have potatoes.

I have the cans of Rotel before. It will be fine. My recipe varies a little based on whats on hand. For us , Picadillio is one of those recopies we make because we do not want to go grocery shopping.

Is more like, "There is ground beef that has to be used or frozen, and something had to be done with those potatoes before they go bad." That's when we make it.

Seemed like a good day for this. Never made it before. Here's what I've got cooking now.

1# ground beef
1/2 onion diced
2 small potatoes- peeled & diced
2 cloves garlic diced
1 can regular rotel - drained
8oz can tomato sauce
1/2 c water
1/2 tsp cumin
Some dashes of Maggi jugo
Some msg

We'll see how it comes out. Looks good right now. I'm worried that's not enough cumin, but I didn't want to go overboard the first time - especially since my family is pretty 'flavor' adverse.

I like it for breakfast tacos, and it's amazing how many variations there are.

Thats way much tomato for 1lb of beef for Picadillo. I don't even use that much tomato in a 3lb Bolognese

I'm sure it will be good. It just won't really taste like Picadillo

It was really good. Ate it with tortillas.

After 80 min or so I took the lid off and it had more liquid than I wanted so I let it simmer w/o the lid for another 30 min or so and it reduced down nicely.

Maybe that was too much tomato , but it certainly reminded me of the tacos I used to get in Harlingen so I don't think it was too far off.

The wife had never had it and she enjoyed it so that's good.

We used to get free ground beef through my old company and I had never had it. Mr. Diesel made it with onion and potato and mixed veggies and lots of cumin. When we were first married we changed it to just meat and peas onion and green bean bc we were avoiding carbs. Haven't made it in a long time but it needs to go back into rotation.

However much your heart desires

In all honestly, we usually eyeball it but if you're not sure I would start with half a cup and add from there.

Pre cook potatoes? Parboil them?

nope. Just raw. Simmer until they are done.

This thread turned out as I suspected. I had no idea how many variations there are...... I just know raisins, capers, olives, and cinnamon will not find their way into mine. To each his own.
