Couple friends and I considering going in on a small make believe still that only exists in our imagination. We'll probably call it Puff The Magic Dragon. Anybody here recommend a good book to help get started?

My Book on Home Distillation: 3 Easy Steps for Success

Synopsis below:

Step One: Buy your equipment anonymously and in cash. No electronic or paper trails.

Step Two: Keep your still well hidden.

Step Three: Don't tell people what you're doing on social media, or message boards, or in person, or at all.

Good luck.

If one were going to do this, they could just google "distilling book amazon" and the joy of the first result would probably be enough to get them started. Theoretically of course.

Theres enough info out there to DIY your own setup. But there's some nice commercially available stuff out there as well.

you are just distilling water, not sure why that would be a problem...

If you don't already, learn to make beer first.

Eh. That's not really necessary. You can just dive in if you want as long as you read up on things.

I'm definitely not saying I've done this, but if I did, I didn't learn to make beer first and it would have been fine.

Yellow Rose Distilling in Houston has that attitude and they ferment in the 90's. Their product is *****

Whitmeyers uses temp control on their fermentations and their product is delicious.

Learn to Brew all the styles and hops etc? No, understand yeast, pitch rates, temp control and the types of alcohol produced by yeast at X temp? I'd say it's pretty important.

Or maybe Yellow Rose just makes their cuts horribly and includes too much heads and tails, I don't know.

It's worth considering.

I definitely think you need to read a lot of material before you start and understand the science if you want something that tastes good, I just don't think you need to actually go through the process of brewing beer to be able to learn distilling.
