Cross posted in Travel. Brother-in-law is in Houston for an M.D. Anderson consultation. Wants to grab the best steak in Houston while there. He gots $$. Recs? From Travel Board, I got Pappas, Vic & Anthony, B&B Butcher, and Steak 48. Muchas gracias.

B&B Butcher is the correct answer. That was absolutely spectacular.

Also its a must to order the Chef Tommy's Bacon. Half inch thick cuts of bacon, covered in this truffle/honey oil and bleu cheese and then baked. I was really skeptical because I absolutely HATE bleu cheese... but this was phenomenal.

For regular Prime steaks (not wagyu, A5, Kobe) , I'll go with Pappas.


That said, I like the B&B sides and appetizers better. And their higher ends cuts are on par with Pappas.

Thanks, Ags. Just got off the phone with him. They are gonna be in Houston a little longer than he thought and the wife could use a little cheering up. Any other restaurant recs besides steak houses? I told him one of the best meals of my life was had at Mark's, went to get him the address and phone number off of the worldwide interwebs and found an article saying they closed last year. Crazy.

Thanks for the kind words. It's actually his wife. She has a really rare mutation of a fairly common cancer, so the folks at M.D. Anderson are all over her. She is going to be fine, I think, it's just hard to convince her of such and the more head scratching and testing they do, the worse it gets for her. And him.

For Steak & Seafood can't go wrong with Trulucks.

TexMex can do Irma's downtown (either one) or Guadalajara Hacienda (several in town).

Vic and Anthony's is the best steakhouse in Houston and I second the Trulucks recommendation for seafood

I think Pappas is the best in town. they were the only ones doing dry-aged steaks for a long time and were thus the best by default. I have heard really good things about B&B and I see that they offer dry-aged steaks as well. I've heard V&A is very good, but I don't see any mention of dry-aging on their menu, which is disappointing. wet-aging is weak.

Underbelly is very, very solid.

And Mark's has closed. However, a new restaurant called One Fifth will be opening in its place sometime in January supposedly. Run by same chef from Underbelly (Chris Shepherd, a Beard award winner), it is supposed to be a different concept every year. This year it is Steak.

I don't live in Houston, so I have only eaten at Vic & Anthony's once when staying downtown, but it was very good. I have always heard very good things about Pappa's and would like to try it sometime.

Absolutely the best dry aged beef in Houston. Seems like a hole in the wall but it has the best food in my opinion.
