i've starting seeing their commercials on TV and hearing their commercials on radio more often. i assume that they are feeling pressure from the BBQ movement around Texas.

But I've only walked into 1 Dickey's and didn't even see a BBQ pit or smoker or anything, so where do they smoke and cook their product? anyone know their meat supplier if it is local or do they use a broadline wholesaler for their meats and products?

They boil their meat, all flavor is in the sauce. It isn't even really BBQ, it is in a class by itself, it is called dickey's.

Ate there once, never again.

Best thing on their menu is a baked potato.sad

Edit: they use electric smokers, not boiling. Still not good though.

Their website says meat is smoked over hickory on site at each restaurant.

We have one out in CA and it's always busy. It's awful and will smoke my own brisket/pork before stepping foot in there.

Never see smoke from there and an employee who once worked there says it is boiled. Maybe it is placed in a electric smoker when done for a short bit.

taste like roast beef to me, not any type of BBQ i am familiar with.

They just built one by my house. I stopped in one day just to see what was up. They use old hickory pellet smokers. The chopped beef sandwich was the cheapest thing on the menu. It was terrible.

The place is packed though all the time because bbq in Colorado is a wasteland.

I was waiting for a friend outside of dickeys in cs when it first opened, and my other buddy said something that proved to be very wise:

"Hmmm...I don't know. I'm not sure I trust bbq joint I can't smell from the parking lot..."

I need to buy a smoker. BBQ here is horrible.

My son only wants to go to one terrible BBQ place because they have in house made chips and lemonade slushies.

"Mommy, we need to go to that BBQ after gymnastics. I am hungry!"

What do you want?

"Buffalo wing potato chips and a slushie."

What about some BBQ?

"No. That is terrible. I will die if I have to eat it."

Ate at the one in Bastrop once. Never again. Overpriced and crappy food. Neither of which appeals to me

Their okra is hard to beat.

Kids eat free sunday. The BBQ is meh but compared against fast food options the place is fine for what it is.

It is horrible. And no matter of kids eat free, their prices are the same as good BBQ places.

It ain't decent as someone said. It is bad bad bad

This. Stopped at one on a road trip because it was convenient. In retrospect, suffering through hunger was a better option.

I honestly don't mind it. It's about like Rudy's. Is it the best bbq? No. Is it even good bbq, in comparison to other Texas joints? No. But it is serviceable as quick, cheap and decent. I can normally get chopped beef, two sides, a roll and a drink for under $9. Good enough for lunch.

I'd much rather eat at Hutchin's in McKinney or Landers in Princeton, but I can't get out of there for under $15.

was gonna say, been twice and the only thing good was the okra.

IIRC the turkey wasnt horrible, but definitely not anything great.

I know it is the texags en voge thing to bash on Rudy's (or any chain food joint for that matter) out of priniciple, but there is a world of difference between Dickey's and Rudy's.

Rudy's is actually pretty solid BBQ - you may not want to admit it, and we all know you can do better in your back yard, but the fact of the matter is that they make some pretty good BBQ that is actually smoked and is consistent.

A burger analogy:

Dickey's:McDonald's::Rudy's:Five Guys

I agree that Rudy's is better than Dickey's, but you're crazy if you think there is a world of difference.

Maybe more in line with:

Dickey's: DQ::Rudy's:Sonic

Sonichamburers are marginally better than DQ burgers, but both are blown away by Whataburger.

I don't think Dickey's is inedible. Its smoked flavored meat (even if it isn't real) covered in bbq sauce. Even in its lowest form, I'd eat if if offered. Its like a Taco Bell burrito or a McDonald's cheeseburger.

So glad I read this. I smelled the smoker outside joint in Wisconsin. They told me it was Texas brisket smoked for 13 hours.

I think each Dickey's might be a bit different, or maybe used to be. Been 6 or 7 years since I ate at one. But I remember one in Fort Worth was actually pretty darn good. Then the one is College Station was pathetic. Being in Texas you're never too far from good barbeque so I don't eat there anymore.

What makes you think it isn't?

Each one is different. The one in downtown Raleigh had to compete with a couple pit masters in the vicinity so they did actually smoke their meats outback behind the store. Inside the store it was the normal vertical hot boxes to keep from getting cold. It wasn't bad, but wasn't great. Still the only place in Raleigh that had brisket or sausage. Everyone else was pulled pork and ribs.

I think their sausage is made in Austin. Maybe Hudson Meat Co. At least it was a few years ago.

Ate at one in Nebraska one time. The turkey breast was above average and the okra was darn good. Guy with me had ribs that were below par.
