Tomassos in the Financial District, on Kearney. Naked Lunch can be interesting too, just down the street.

For good seafood in a very casual atmosphere...Swan's Oyster Depot. Don't think it gets any fresher.

Mama's at Washington Square was the best breakfast I had there and the first restaurant I will go back to when back in the Bay Area.

If you want a sandwich, I's suggest Ike's Place. There's not a lot of seating, so my wife and I walked north a couple of blocks to Duboce Park and ate.

The House in North Beach has amazing Asian food.

Wayfare Tavern is one of my favorite places I've been.

Gotta go to the HOPR (house of prime rib). Gotta go early and experience a real bartender too.

Tadich Grill is a personal favorite, the one spot I return to when in San Fran.

Derm, I second Tadich Grill. Also, I love to walk around North Beach (Italian area) and just stumble in to a random place. Never had a bad meal there but The Stinking Rose is my least favorite. I know you like Italian, so that will be enjoyable for you both.

A friend of some winemaking friends just opened Aveline and they recommended it. I have yet to go, though.

We enjoyed Foreign Cinema in the Mission District

if you visit golden gate park, Park Chow is right across the street. great place for lunch.

Another for Tadich Grill. One of the best meals I've ever had.

I blew a weeks worth of per diem eating in the bar at Gary Danko one night. Didn't regret it.

Also had some cioppino at Tadich that was very good.
