There is a brewpub that opened up there that may be good...

I used to live there and I cannot give you much...so that says something.

I know of a pretty good little mobile pizza joint in town they have the best wood-fired pizza around! Though I may be a LITTLE biased

Abi Haus (the brew pub im assuming) quite tasty. Probably my favorite in town

Sharon's BBQ is about the only decent BBQ in town. But it is only decent.....we need a good BBQ place careful with asking about "Sharon Allen's" you may get sent to Joe Allen's BBQ and that place is awful (they are ex's)

Lytle Land and Cattle (owned by Sharon) is good, but Perini Ranch in Buffalo Gap is much better(15 min south)

Wholly Cow for burgers, local joint, pretty good.

Mexican......not really a fan of La Poplar, i think Alfonzo Hernandez Bakery is better, but they all are similar and just burrito joints.

If you hit up Perini Ranch on sunday they have a chuck wagon "buffet", that is outstanding. Don't let the word buffet scare you, has the best chicken fried steak I've ever had. If you cant make it, then Skeets (in Abilene!!) does a pretty nice chicken fry as well.

For Mexican food that isn't just a burrito joint, try Farolito's just east of downtown. It's off of N third and cottonwood streets. Don't get the queso, though.

Second on Beehive. I like the steaks there better than Perini's, and it is downtown.

If you're going to be there during the week and want a sandwich for lunch, go to Bogey's downtown on Cedar, I think. They're only open for lunch during the week. McKay's Bakery is almost right across the street and they're open longer. Bogey's get's their bread from McKay's.

For good Chinese go to Szechuan, on S. First. The food is good and portions are large.

bonfirewillburn,

Thanks for the suggestions... Is your pizza place available for daily dining or just catering? Would love to give it a chance.

Abilene is the worse place on the planet! Your options are super religious or super sleaze.

Caprock,

Thanks for your input. I'm sorry you don't like Abilene, but I have only been here 3 days and so far it is ok. Cheer up, the Aggies finished in the top 5 in the country for the first time in 60 + years!

I was there for about a year. I think I realized how bad it was on about the 4th day, so you at least have another day left

Just ate at Perini's on Sunday night. Been there a lot. Had the ribeye, hominy, jalapeno bites and Jack Daniel's Whiskey bread pudding. Awesome. I love that place, especially in the winter when they have the fire pits and fire place going. A little expensive, but well worth it for the experience and food.

Caprockcadet: I'm not sure what you were looking for in Abilene. Dance clubs? You were probably single too. No, it's not Austin or Dallas. But there are some great people around there. And if you like to hunt or like the outdoors, it's close to a lot. Buffalo Gap also has one of the best wine / food festivals in the state. Anyway, I enjoy each visit there.

Cap I no longer have the opportunity to live in Texas (due to job) but I have been on a deer lease south of town for 12 years w/5 guys I knew since kindergarden an abilene has some excellent places to eat, half the reason I stayed on it so long was looking forward coming back twice a year to eat. An the hunting was always good, but due fuel cost and out of state tag I won't be back next year so that sux. An if you were looking for clubs Jaguars out on I20 west of town is a grade A mens club w/ a VIP feel without the cost,so if the OP reads this you owe it to yourself to check it out if it is your thing(2 thumbs up).

Yea I just ran into a waitress from Carrle Barons, they said this was thier busiest week ever.

Other establishments went to bat for them and encouraged thier patrons to give them a shot. It seems to have worked, for now.

Owner is a good guy, former youth pastor IIRC. I hope they can keep fighting! Abilene can be fickle.

I lived out that way for many years. To this day, Ft. Griffin, better known as the " Beehive" is hands down the best steak I have ever eaten.
If you go on a Thursday, they have the best all you can eat shrimp on the planet! That is not an exaggeration.
If you go on a weekend, their prime rib, while expensive, is better than anything I have ever eaten.
My suggestion is to get the beef kabob as it is three tenderloins(not the center cut but good) or get the 14 oz tenderloin. You could go to Vegas and ask for the best and it does not compare. I swear to you that nirhaman (SP?) and ali are the best people that you will ever meet. They will make your meal great. Just tell them that an old doctor from Breckenridge sent you.
Another suggestion is to get a Long Island Iced Tea... Wow!
Seriously, these guys are great.
Don't know about their Abilene location but would recommend their place in Albany honestly.
Much better than Perirni(which is great) but you can decide.
If you cant tell, I am in love with this place and plan on making a return trip soon. Go there and you can thank me later.

As an Albany native, I can absolutely vouch for the greatness of Ft. Griffin General Merchandise and the Esfendary bros. When I was growing up, they also had incredible fajitas on Wednesdays and all you can eat catfish and frog legs on Tuesdays.

I don't think any of the old places I used to go in Abilene still exist:

Gardski's Loft
The Outpost
Royal Inn
Chelsea's (for mountain of nachos and underage beer)

And it is a shame to hear that Joe Allen's isn't the same since they split. He would cater functions in Albany. Man can cook some steak.

The outpost had to have closed down almost 15 years ago. I haven't heard about the brewpub but may have to give it a try this weekend.

Brewpub isnt really accurate. Abi-Haus

They have some really great beer you dont get anywhere else out here and there food is very good. Prohibition Era cocktails.

Has the feel of a brew pub though.

Pappy Slocum is working on getting upmand running out in Clyde, they will be a brewery.

Gardski's loft was awesome!

Try Lola's in B Gap for breakfast.

Gardski's fried cheese was the best. It was bigger than most everywhere else - the size of an egg roll or a Double Dave's pep roll. The only place I've ever seen it like that again was Shorty Smalls in Little Rock.
