It's only my personal tastes, but I really don't have any affinity for smokey drinks- beers, Islay malts, whatever. Don't even like Johnny Walker Black for that reason. So for Scotch I stick with the nonsmokey single malts.

Very much like Balvenie 12, so my fiance got me Balvenie 21 a couple years ago. It's fascinating to compare the different aged Scotches from the same distillery. If the Balvenie 12 was a single violin player, the Balvenie 21 was the entire symphony.

Then I had Balvenie 30....just for ****s and grins...still the most expensive drink I've ever purchased.

I have had nearly every Balvenie up through the 30 yr old (missed a couple of the 17s), and the Doublewood is still the one I keep coming back to. If you told me I could only drink one scotch for the rest of my life, it would be the Doublewood.

Generally more of a Bourbon or Irish Whiskey fan, but my Uncle was given a bottle of Auchentoshan from the distillery, and it was delicious.

Laphroaig and Lagavulin are the go-to single malts from Islay for me. Springbank 25 year old is probably the most sublime.

I currently have in my house

Balvenie 14 Carribean Cask,
Balvenie 15 Single Barrel
Laphroaig 18
Oban 14
The Yamazaki 12

I bought The Yamazaki out of curiosity, and it's not too bad. It is my mass consumption bottle at the moment. My next to purchase will be a Balvenie 17 Madeira and the Balvenie 17 Peated Cask.

I'd love to then try the older stuff from Talisker and Springbank

Glenlivet 12 is my go to. My favorite is probably Tobermory 15. It is also the most expensive I've ever had... go figure. Not a big Glenfidditch fan, nor am I a fan of overly peaty whiskeys.

I am a big fan of the Balvenie 17 Madeira, but not so much the Peated Cask.

I know of a store that still has the Balvenie 17 Sherry Cask, and Founders Reserve 10 yr. Let me know if you are interested.

Tomintoul 27yr old is my favorite, but they no longer make it; it has been replaced by a 30yr old. The only Tomintoul I have found near Ft. Hood is the 10yr old. It's not bad, but it good stand to age a little more in my opinion.

I just want to share that, after getting hammered, I sucked down almost a whole bottle of Middleton Very Rare one night. Luckily it wasn't mine. Great stuff but not really the way it's supposed to be enjoyed.

I don't mind a touch of peat, but I migrate heavily to Speysides with the occasional Lowland and Highland. Some of the Islay's are just too much brine/iodine/peat for me to bother buying a whole bottle.

My tops:

Affordable enough to have all the time
Glenlivet 12
Glenfiddich 12
Balvenie Doublewood 12
Macallan 12

Getting pricier
Balvenie Caribbean Cask
Oban 14
Glenrothes '91 or '94
Macallan Cask Strength
Aberlour Abunadh
Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban

Expensive but damn good
Oban 14 Distiller's Edition
Glenrothes '84
Balvenie 21
