Had an excellent bloody Mary at The Republic last weekend. Unfortunately it is not in the budget to go there on a regular basis. Anyone have a good recipe I can do at home?

Buy Zing Zang. Its the best bloody mary mix I've ever used. Nice and spicy!

Thanks! Do they sell that brand at the grocery stores or do I need to get it at the liquor store?

I recently enjoyed a Bloody Mary that used a bit of Guinness in place of worcestershire. Damn that was good!

Red Eye Brand - the only one to use. Not in all the stores, but at Specs.

Zang is to tart?

I think Red Eye is in Bryan, Tx. Have not seen it, but it is on the label.

I use Mr & Mrs T's and spice it up a bit. Add several shakes of Worcestershire sauce and a half teaspoon of horse radish to a glass and add the vodka to suit your taste. Makes a pretty good blood mary.

Thanks for all the great input. I ended up using a recipe from foodnetwork.com. It is Emeril Lagasse's Bloody Mary recipe and it turned out fantastic. However, if I ever do end up using a mix I will try one of the ones recommended.

also not a fan of mixes. I'll drink a Bloody Mary mix, but I prefer to make my own starting with V8. everything is added to taste, I don't measure a single thing:

worcestershire
tabasco
celery salt
black pepper
lime juice
a squeeze of one olive, add the olive

I like zing zang, but rim the glass with Tim Love's wild game rub

http://www.cheftimlove.com/onlinestore.asp?tab=ld

and replace the vodka with Ardberg Scotch, they call it a William Wallace at Lonesome Dove.

My Uncle swears by Mcclure's Spicy bloody Mary mix. I like but I like the ones I listed better. To me it seems it has to much pickle flavor. Had a bloody Mary at a party and he was using Freshies hot bloody mary. It was good had a lot of heat. I would need to try it s few more times to officially recommend it but it was very good mix with a lot of heat.

Mr & Ms T's Spicy Bloody Mary Mix
Splash of Frank's
Splash of Worcestershire Sauce
Dash of Ground Pepper
Slice of Lime
Garlic Stuffed Olives
Pickled Spicy Green Beans
Celery
Carrot

I've also enjoyed a strip of beef jerky in the mix, as well as pickled spicy garlic cloves.

I, too, like Zing Zang.

When not using a mix I like to use Clamato and horseradish in a Bloody Mary.
Of course, there are some who would say then it is no longer a Bloody Mary.

If you want to remake the Republic's (great cocktail, BTW) I was told the few tidbits of off-menu information that makes it spectacular.
quote:
Hangar One Chipotle Vodka, fresh cilantro, sweet 100 tomato, house-smoked sea salt
is the what the menu says, but the "secret" is 10 muddled sweet 100 tomatoes and citrus salt.

I nailed their Basil & Bluegrass on the first try at home, but I have not been able to master their Old Fashioned. There is something special in theirs that eludes me.

There is a restaurant in New Orleans called "Cochon". They make a killer Bloody Mary with the au jus from their pork.

The recipe can be found online with a google search. You'll have to substitute the pork au jus (which I have done). You'll also have to buy quite a few ingredients that sound odd for a Bloody Mary, but it is fantastic!
