I've been told it no longer exists or it might have moved? Is this true? We don't get back to C.S. much so any input would be great.

The Somerville Steakhouse has been closed for a couple of years, and recently (spring 2011) Boondocks Restaraunt opened in that location.

Sodalaks in Snook, or the two Sodalaks in B-CS, are probably the closest thing locally to the old SS.

Wow, I never thought that place would close. Too bad. I'll check out the others, thanks.

Used to be a 1-2 hour wait there on Friday and Saturday nights. Would load up a group, sit in their parking lot and drink beer until our name was called. Huge steaks for cheap price. We always looked forward to heading out there.

I used to teach in Somerville. Do you mean the Country Inn?

Yes they do. I am not sure why so many aggies call it the Somerville Steakhouse. It makes it hard to find when you stop to ask for directions and no one in Somerville knows what you are talking about.

Didn't they open a new place on University under a different name? That's what I heard at least.

Sodolak's opened "Beefmasters" where T-Bone Jones used to be.

that what im guessing most mean by the "somerville steakhouse"

and the Country inn IMO was never the same after the owner (Eddie) and his wife got a divorce and he sold her the business..Im guessing this would of been in the mid 90's or so.
It stayed open for some time after that but again it was his x-wife running the joint,(and she eventually ran it into the ground and all they had left going was the name and legacy) after big Eddie left it was never the same. Food was not near as good as they switched their suppliers and were buying cheaper meat.
back in the 80's and early 90's that was the place to go, people would come form all over the state to eat there.
hell you ordered an X-Small steak and the damn thing wouldnt fit on the plate, order a medium size and it would be folded in half and still wouldnt fit on the plate...and oh so good.

When I was a grad student at A&M, I took a Nobel Laureate out there. He laughed and said in a thick German accent,

"Vell, I do not vant to be considered a vussy, so I vill have zee medium T-bone medium rare."

Then when they brought him his Shiner Bock, he spilled it all over himself because he hoisted it up too aggressively. Said he thought the mug was glass, but it was plastic and weighed nothing. He laughed again and ordered another beer.

What a great night that was.

It was the one place in Summerville that people went to get a steak

Seems pretty simple.

If you're looking for food in Somerville, I can recommend Buffalo Bar and Grill. Not sure they have steak but they do specials every day. Never had a bad meal there and the owners are always there and super nice!

Took many a lady to Country Inn. Always a great place for an aggie date night and the big meat was certainly a conversation piece.

Besides Sommervill there was a Country Inn in Brenham same type of food and menu, maybe after the divorce.Been to both. When my kids were here in the 80,s we would get all the Chicken fry you could eat for a fixed price and we ate well, this was in Sommerville.

When I was a kid, Sodolak's was called Disher's.

I was thinking about this the other day, is the Longhorn still out there on Texas and 21? If so is it any good?
Slicer97

No, the Longhorn moved one street north of WJB in downtown.

Man, the Longhorn had one of the best chicken fried steaks you could get. Perfect size and with the stuffed baked potato and salad - a glorious meal indeed it was.

History:

Frank Sodolak started Country Inn
He sold to Eddie and Jackie Archer and opened Sodolaks. He had a place in Brenham, on the hill at Hwy 36. Then he moved to Lyons, and ended up in Snook.
Wade opened CI in Brenham. He was also involved with CI in Huntsville.
Eddie sold to Amanda, who changed everything and killed the Somerville location.
Steven Sodolak opened the Sodolaks in Somerville, closed that, and opened the Bryan location. He also had the CS location, but closed it.
Curtis Sodolak took over the Snook location when Frank died. If you notice, Frank named his place Sodolaks Original Country Inn.

The Somerville location used to buy the cheapest boxed beef they could get. It was a National beef select product. I was told it was retired dairy cattle.

good memories growing up in regards to both country inn's in Brenham and Somerville.... Those mashed potatoes with brown gravy......and fried squash at the Somerville location.... Damn shame I can't take my kids there to experience it
