The Texas A&M Corps of Cadets announced the passing of Former Commandant Col. Donald L. Burton on Friday evening. He served as commandant from 1983 until 1986.

According to Col. Burton's obituary, the Temple man passed in a local hospital at the age of 89 on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

"Col. Burton was the last active-duty commandant to lead the Corps of Cadets. His contributions were many, and we are grateful for his lasting impact on the Corps of Cadets."

Here. T&P for his family. Obligatory "Don't do dumb things!" Was there for that speech in Rudder. Great man and excellent Commandant.

Here. The email from the CCA noted that Co. Burton was instrumental in helping to change the commandant from an active-duty officer to a University employee. I didn't pay much attention after I left the Corps in '80, but, now that's been pointed out, I feel like I have some catching up to do. Why was the change made, and how is the structure managerially and functionally different?
