My son has decided to join the Corps and to sign a contract his Jr year. He has figured all of this out on his own and I need help guiding him through the process. I am a non-reg, so I have no idea how any of this works.

He is a Jr in HS right now and is top 3-5% of his class. He wants to pursue a Medical path through the Military. We want to schedule a Spring visit to to campus to get him in front of a counselor and start figuring out how we need to proceed. Some questions:

  • Does the Corps have its own counselors?
  • How do we inquire about scholarships through the Corps?
  • He is unsure as to which branch he wants to go, Navy, Army, AF, does he need to designate that to be in a specific unit? - He really wants to go Marines, but alas, no MD's there to my knowledge.
  • Wants to study Bio medical engineering
  • Grandpa is class of '76 and I am class of '98

Any guidance would be appreciated.

His short BIO:
  • Top 3-5% academics - Still needs to take the SAT/ACT
  • NHS
  • Student Council
  • PAL's mentor - mentors special needs kids in elementary
  • 3 letters Varsity Football - Linebacker
  • Qualified life guard
  • I don't know if any of this matters!!! Only trying to show he is well rounded, proud Dad sort of stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Start applying for a 4 year scholarships with a military branch.

I received a 4 year Army scholarship with Army ROTC.

Army also had education delay. My buddy was in Med School as a 2LT and then did residency active duty.

Ignorance here, but do you do this directly through the branch or through A&M? I don't want to be dealing with a enlisted recruiter calling me every 10 mins. Not to sound harsh, but I dealt with that when I was in HS and it is a pain.

Appreciate any guidance.

lol I hear yah.

Call the Trigon/A&M ROTC program directly. I'm sure they have a website with numbers somewhere and go through them.

I remember walking into the recruiting office in 2007 during the surge and getting offered some good money. My father was with me but I'm sure he was glad I went to college first given the time period and how bad it was overseas

Lots of routes to military medicine.

Two contacts:

Army ROTC - 979 845 2814 - Ask for David Manning

Med School Military Med program - https://medicine.tamu.edu/military/index.html

militarymedicine@tamu.edu

The PM there is listed as Rebecca Itz. It used to be a retired Army Colonel who commanded the hospital at Ft. Hood. He may still be hanging around that program.

The Corps also has its own academic advisors in addition to the ones the in the individual colleges.

Hey. You can shoot me an email if you'd like, lots of nuance to what to do and such. Especially this far away. But if he's at A&M, it probably has one of the best Offices of Professional School Advising. So that's good.

My niece went thru med school (UTSW) via the Army but didn't sign up until she had been there a semester. She had zero military bearing but loved it, kept her summers full and I think she had to do 6 or 7 years after, tours at Walter Reed, Bliss, Hood, Korea and Iraq. Got preference for a fellowship when she got out BC she was military and is now a high risk pregnancy doc. Has a picture of her in Iraq hanging in her office and at home. One extra about the Corps at A&M, anyone on ROTC Scholarship also has room and board paid for, that's a huge perk. And don't worry about recruiters calling you about any scholarships, those are very competitive and once they're gone, they're gone.

My four year Army Scholarship did not cover room and board.

I did get a monthly stipend from the Army but it definitely wasn't enough to cover room and board.

This was 2008-2012, so I'm sure things change all the time.

I think A&M changed your cover room and board now. I also had a 4 year scholarship and just got tuition and the stipend, which I thought I was taking in the dough with. I remember at Advanced Camp in 2003 other cadets talking that their schools covered room and board then, and thinking that would be nice.

Yeah, I remember doing a joint FTX with Sam Houston state and prairie view and they had everything covered.

Heck, I got a letter in the mail from Portland University offering me a full ride with my army scholarship….thought about it for a minute

Be sure your son checks out scholarships awarded by your local A&M Club and applies. Most of these are awarded over and above scholarships through the Corps, A&M or the military.

If he's an athlete strongly suggest considering E-1

At the risk of sounding like an ******* to Jock07, I'd strongly suggest you (the OP) ignore all suggestions to consider a specific outfit. Outfits and their culture change yearly, so any advice more than 6 months old is obsolete.

Additionally, cadets know only their own outfits and the barracks gossip of other outfits. E1 may be great, but any cadet in E1 has no idea how it compares to any other outfit.

Take outfit advice from the commandant's office, the military departments (they probably have no opinion), and the academic advisors. Ignore all outfit advice from everywhere else

I didn't see any musical background listed.
I recommend "accidentally" joining the Aggie Band.

IIRC, way back in my day there was a pre-med outfit along with other outfits manned with cadets taking similar majors (my squadron was almost all engineers, for example).

Having upper-class academic mentorship in-house was a valuable resource for cadets taking challenging majors.

Cool. If he's an athlete I'd strongly suggest considering The Athletic Company, E-1.

Also, don't let people say that the Corps will impact your grades in a negative way.

My buddy was the Corps Commander and went off to Med School via Army at UTMB.

He then went on to a fellowship and his field is now pediatric gastrointestinal focused.
