In short, he was contacting the board directly and went above and beyond for his mentee AFTER she was deemed unfit for command twice! Then he turned it into a racism issue.

"The last Army four-star general fired for misconduct was Gen. Kevin Byrnes, who in 2005, as the head of the service's Training and Doctrine Command, was dismissed over an extramarital affair.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal resigned in 2010 after a Rolling Stone article published comments from McChrystal and senior aides that were critical of then-Vice President Joe Biden and other officials in President Barack Obama's administration."

I remember reading about this months ago when the investigation started. Seems pretty clearcut. I'm sure that there is quite a bit of informal nudging done to promotion boards, but this was clearly egregious.

General officers sometimes get ahead of their ski's. MG Fair was a 2 star at Hood in the mid-70's, got his 3rd star and a Corps in Germany. The he had his driver do some work on his POV, somehow the POV got away and rolled down a hill, smacking another officer's car. And supposedly he tried to swap quarters with a 2-star because he liked it better, anyway his Corps command lasted about a month.

This does sound over the line, I agree, but there is no way Patton or any number of our WW1/WW2 generals would have made it to top command in todays military.
