Teaching at USMA might have been my best three years in the Army. Like most Corps / ROTC folks, I thought hating West Pointers was the thing to do. I have an immense respect for the kids and how tough that place is now.
I never watched a single Army game before, but after holding review sessions at 11pm in the locker rooms after practice, having Jeff Monken drop into my class to see how his players were living, etc. I'm a fan for life. I would regularly get emails from the coaches in all sports about players - not asking for leniency or to delay putting in grades for kids in trouble, but asking me to push them harder, where the coaches could help in the schedule, and communicating if a kid had some personal troubles they thought the profs could help work through.
