B-17 42-30642 / Geronimo Details

At about 0845 hours at about 20000 feet, near Aachen 5045N 0600E A/C 642 peeled out of formation and dropped behind. The pilot called out over VHF saying one. engine out and was aborting. A/C fell behind the group and was last reported straggling near 5045N 0600E. No chutes were seen. Cause of distress flak, one engine out, crashed Haren, Belgium.

My dad was a B-24 bombardier in the 392d Bomb Group out of Wendling, UK. Every mission, every crew, every downed aircraft and a ton of AAR's are all on this website.

This might be a morbid question, but how did they decide who to bring back to US bury and who stayed in theater to be buried?

My understanding and research have indicated the family was offered the choice to return the body for burial.

my grandfather was a co-pilot on B-24s of the 15th Air Force based out of FOGGIA, Italy in 1943-44

shot down over Yugoslavia and as a Jew on the run from the Nazis. not sure how he got out. he got rid of all his ribbons shortly after the war.

never got to hear any of his stories

My great-grandfather flew the B26 Martin Marauder and was shot down off the coast of Sicily in the summer of '43. I have his foot locker and used it at A&M.

I visited two B 24 bases a few weeks ago: Seething Control Tower/Airbase and Rackheath Control Tower/Airbase in East Anglia, as well as B17 base Thorpe Abbotts, home of the 100th Bomb Group
