My Uncle, class of 1954, was commissioned into the US Army after graduation and unfortunately, we have no paperwork showing his military records (DD215?) so we are struggling to order the marker for his grave.

His wife had all of that and when she passed her kids disposed of all the documents that the VA is requesting.

I am working with the VA but I figured I'd ask for assistance here as well.

Things you probably already know:

There is the chance his records were in the great fire of 1973, though.

This link has a phone # for NPRC customer service.

I do know that some (many) funeral homes are very versed in this problem

One other idea : Back in that era and even up until the internet age, Vets were told to ALWAYS submit a copy of their DD214 (or DD215) to the appropriate record keeper in their county of residence - such as the County Clerk.
It becomes public record and can be retrieved way into the future, such as your situation.

Best wishes and good luck.
