Does everyone know that Life magazine ran a story on the Corps and had a full page picture

of the Corps lined up in front of Duncan?

I'll get the date later. 1949 as I remember.

My senior father is just visible on the far left (picture) file, about 7 or 8 back. The Life article had lots of photos of stuff around A&M, but in B&W. This is one of the out takes. For you former Bandsmen out there, note the non silver bass in the last rank of the Band, along with how there were non seniors in the bugle rank. Some traditions evolved over time. This shot is your typical 'Hurry Up and Wait' shot. Timeless stuff.

Heading out to the Drill Field for the Review. I think this review was to honor the visit of Audie Murphy to campus. The trees in the Quad grew some over the years.

Try 78!

Short coats were great in 40s! Lasted ONE year , then dropped. Why?

We didn't have them obviously, but I remember people had pass downs and called them "Ike jackets"

i was in C AF dorm 6-too far back to see.
A story from 1945- Band lined up in front of Duncan. PHead Day when Fish and Frogs were
allowed to mistreat PHeads. Three of us grabbed CountryHiggins 48 4 year FB
letterman- I said Mr Higgins, you are coming with us !
At the same time the Band started to play the Anthem -we had to come to attention. When they
finished, Country started runing and we gave up.

Country served in Korea and received two Silver Stars for saving his Puerto Rican company!
He was killed after grabbing a live grenade dropped by a Korean trainee which exploded.
A real HERO!

When you read about Jackie Sherril on the football board and realize he's as far in the past to these new fish as Madison Bell was when I was a fish. That seemed like a looooooooooong time ago.

I miss seeing the real drill field uniform. Green fatigue pants, combat boots and white t-shirt.
Or even with BDU pants as was in my day. Both were sharp drill uniforms.

The shorts and tennis shoes outfit just seems like high school......

When you realize that if you ever wrote a book about your time at A&M in the Corps, you'd have to include long chapters on blind dates and adventures in hitchhiking and both of these have been out of the inventory for years.

Abatt - for some reason Fish from Austin were put in A Batterry- at least 5 I can think of. Two ended
up commissioned in thr AF. The rest all graduated non-reg. This was in the 40s a llittle ahead of you!

To quote the late great Waylon Jennings "Tell me one more time just so I'll understand it". Why are there other than seniors on the bugle rank?

Highly likely that LTC Adams was still figuring out how to organize the Band having only taken over from Dunn 2 years prior. If you look at older Band photos from the 30's you see the Bugle Rank populated by non zips. I would have to dig into the Band website to watch some old drill tapes to see if they have ones old enough to show when the only Zip Bugle Rank started.

I went back to the CoC website and got on the Aggie Band Drill section. There were some drills from '47 thru '49 and it looked like the BR had non-zips on them. The next available drills were from '54 and the Bugle Ranks were all zips by then. So the mystery is what year between '50 and '53 did it change?

Any guys out there know?

Last edit on this. Got a reply from Mike Hering '76 with the response that on Page 42 of the 'Texas Aggie Band Book', of which I have a copy (1994 I think is when it was put out), there is a picture of the Band marching in Houston in '53 stating that LTC Adams had made the decision to put only seniors on the BR at that time. Assuming that the photo was from the Rice Corps trip in 1953, we have our answer. There have been only seniors on the Bugle Rank since the '53 season.

Thank you for a prompt, on point, courteous, detailed reply. You don't always get that on here. You pay your money, and you take your chances.

Now, let's see if I can hit the daily double. Look in your big BQ History Book and see if the FTAB went to the Gator Bowl after the '57 season, Bear Bryant's last game as A&M coach. I've never heard any stories about that.

I found on YouTube several videos about the 1957 Gator Bowl. Showed all kinds of pre game and half time pagentry. The Aggie Band was no where to be found in any of them so I have to assume that the Band did not make that trip. I think that the team was going to be offered a trip to the Sugar Bowl on NYD but the loss to Texas on Turkey Day lost them that chance. Bryant had already made it known that he was leaving for Bama and the team likely had the GAS on this game, which they lost in the 4th Qtr, 3 to 0. In the mud.

Anyone know anything else on this?

I looked in the online Battalions and could find no articles regarding the band making the trip to Florida; Yell leaders and about 60 students made the trip.

I don't know what a waggle is. If you're referring to the young lady, then I expect that she shined the jump boots. Are you saying she didn't? And if so, what proof do you have?
