So Fort Hood is now Fort Cavazos and Fort Benning is Fort Moore. I had heard about Fort Hood, but I didn't know about Fort Benning. Seems kind of weird, but I guess I will get used to it.

Which means that I am now a (two time) graduate of a school, the Benning School for Wayward Boys, which no longer exists.

And I still want to know why they changed Bragg to Liberty instead of Ridgeway.

He was born in Virginia ( the south)
He advocated foreign policy be based only on vital national interests (no deep state ties)
He reconciled with former enemies, shaking the hand of an old Luftwaffe pilot
He was highly competent and believed that character mattered.

Now do you understand why the Commission could not seriously consider him?

I was kind of hoping for Ft Benavidez myself but that would be two hispanic bases. I think Liberty was the name of a base in Afghanistan, IIRC. Rucker is now Novosel, he was probably one of the best known and nicest Army helicopter pilots ever but man, is that change getting a lot of pushback from those era guys.

I was stationed at Fort Hood, Fort Bragg and Fort Benning.

My daughter's birth certificates will always say Fort Hood and Fort Benning!

Yep! I've talked to many of my senior enlisted 11 Bravos. We all wanted Benavidez. God forbid they named an army post after an enlisted man

Everything I have heard on it was the the 82d mafia and the SOCOM dudes couldn't come to any sort of consensus -- both sides demanded something from their community, and the impasse resulted in Ft Liberty. Which is eminently stupid. Someone should have just decided.

The current SecDef was the XVIII Corp commander. You'd think he could have broken the tie, since Ridgeway was also the XVIII Corps commander.

Maybe in 40-50 years, they can rename it Fort Clark, after recently retired GEN Rich Clark*, who commanded both the 82nd and SOCOM (and the Ranger Regiment, for good measure.)

*Disclaimer - then MAJ Rich Clark was the S-3 and XO of the first battalion I was assigned to, 1-6 IN (M), at Smith Barracks, from 1997-1999.

The money spent on this is insane ($11M/installation and counting). It is not just changing signs. There is software that has to be updated in police and fire systems. It is also any sign on post that had any CSA name on it (street, building, park, lake, etc...).

I work for Installation Management Command (IMCOM) and see reports on this from time-to-time. This 3-star command is responsible for executing the changes.

The money could be better spent elsewhere.
When the truth comes out, do not ask me how I knew.
Ask yourself why you did not.

They did. Ft. Picket to Ft. Barfoot after Army Tech Sgt. T. Barfoot (WWII Medal of Honor winner) and Ft. Pol to Ft. Johnson after Sgt. William Johnson. WWI Medal of Honor winner. See you would have gotten the correct answer had you just spoken to a group of 19Ks.

They seem to be calling Fort Cavesos "Fort Cav" which is actually kind of appropriate.

Same with "Stonewall Jackson Lake" in WV, thing is, his birthplace is just 30 miles up the road is super pissed about this and doesn't want the name changed (even if he was a Confederate General)

Agree. The whole concept of changing names is just stupid.
