What is it and what medicine is best? Son is on his way got back from Advance Camp and not feeling so great. Last time it was a cough that lasted a good while.

No lie, it is pretty much just like Covid except that it affects young people and doesn't last as long.

Same thing at basic training too. Once one guy got sick it was only a matter of time. Had one kid get pinkeye, we all told him to go to sick call and he didn't. 5 of us who slept around him all woke up with pink eye the next morning.
I remember my zip year getting the crud so bad I couldn't even swallow without my throat being on fire. Walked over to the quack shack on campus and they gave me a penicillin shot in the ass! My ass was sore for the rest of the day, but damn I felt like a new man the next morning .

Summer / Christmas break serve as distributed germ retrieval exercises. The germs that cause coughing spread best, and each subsequent host adds whatever else they have to the mix. A month in, and there's a cocktail "crud" working it's way through every unit.
Honestly, not much to be done about it. Maximize fluids and minimize sugar. Cough drops. Rest and isolation if it's more serious.
The nature of seasonal college dispersion & aggregation + these close quarters just breeds the opportunity to put an immune system to work.

When I was a Drill Sergeant, we called it "Joe-itis". We were lucky enough to catch it at the start of every cycle when all the new recruits showed up from across the country with all kinds of sicknesses.
Vitamin C and constant hand washing. The only time I didn't get the crud was Junior year. I was probably washing my hands about a dozen times a day.
Bourbon, lemon drops and honey. The cure all.... Either that or Turpentine, as my grandmother would have gone to. I would go with the first and go on about my business.
A good run across campus in the middle of the day, followed by a dip in the golf course water hazards does wonders for the health of young men in the Corps
