Brigadier General Patrick R. Michaelis '93. Former E-1 Jock. By all accounts a good dude.

He's a Army brat and like most brats, he from everywhere. I speak from personal knowledge being a Air Force brat that happen by luck to have been born in Texas.

Gotta admit I did not know what the Combat Action Badge was until I looked it up because I did not recognize it. Will be fun to see where he leads the Corps into the future

Prediction: Cadets Will be posting within the next 12 months that he's the worst Commandant in the history of ever.

Seriously, seems like a good dude, I wish him success, and I hope he's willing to come slog it out here on TexAgs, as General Ramirez did.

Cadets are contractually obligated to hate the current guy and think he's weak.

Me too, but I'm a Texan only because my Dad was and I went to A&M.

I give my wife flak all the time because only myself and our youngest are true, born in Texas, Texans. Wife was born in LA due to parents work, and oldest two were born at JBLM when I was stationed there.

I hear he has a good rep amongst the combat arms regular army, good series of jobs one doesn't get unless they are good.

This is going to be an interesting generational shift. Michaelis is the first non baby boomer in a long time. And will be the youngest in the job in since Woodall got the gig in 77 (assuming my math is right).

Honestly this is for the best. Have to continue to move in the direction of the rest of the country otherwise recruiting and everything else will get left behind. A new approach and ideas are always good for the long term success of an organization.

I hope he reverses a few policies that have been in place recently. This guy looks like he has enough toxic masculinity to whip the corps back into shape.

Secondly, it makes me feel really old that somebody from class of '93 is a general.

Buck, I don't pretend to know what the military wants of the personnel these days. But I don't see how the Corps can make a spurt in growth to 3,000 without lowering expectations/standards. We are seeing the same thing in the enlisted. In a recent announcement, the DOD is considering no longer requiring even a HS diploma in order to hit recruiting quotas.

That was the Army, not all DOD, and it has since dropped the idea.

Did the Corps ever drop PT standards in recent years, or am I thinking of weight/BMI standards?

I served with Patrick when we were field grades, and I am certain he is going to be an amazing Commandant.

He is not only a combat arms guy with 3+ deployments (2 x Iraq, 1 x Afghanistan in battalion-level command), he is probably the smartest, most innovative and strategic-thinking officer I know. He understands training and leadership at every tactical level, and has also served in the political levels of the Army -- so he is equipped to manage the political dynamics of the position.

He commanded at the O6-level in Recruiting, and commanded Fort Jackson as a 1-star -- the primary initial entry training base for the Army. So he has recent practical experience in attracting and retaining this generation of young people.

I feel like he is going to inherit a lot of goodness from the previous team, along with a lot of University investments to help with recruiting -- the Patriot Scholarships, the Murray Scholarship, etc. In addition, the Corps has the full backing of University leadership, and that has not always been the case.

IMO he was a home run hire.

Completely agree - a Home Run selection! He's the right man for the job!

Given the disgusting state of our senior leadership in the Pentagon, I'm a little sorry to see this guy retire and come to A&M (although his seems to be a really strong choice for us). We need real warriors to fight back against the shameful degradation of our military in DC by the leftist politicians-in-uniform.

A million reasons. Health. Tired of moving his family. Commandant is his dream job. Didn't get nominated for 2nd star, and is at a career dead end. Doesn't want the next assignment.

Also, retirement has changed, he could have transitioned to the newer system that is more like a 401k and not dependent on strictly number of years.

He would've been too old to transition to the new blended retirement system. I think the cutoff to opt in was around the 05 year group iirc, though hardly anyone did.

Thanks, wasn't sure when the switch was. MFP was commissioned in '11, they went to the new system to give them more flexibility.
