Maj. Robert A. Richards, USAF Boeing B-52H-175-BW Stratofortress pilot 02-NOV-1967
near Rome-Griffiss AFB, Rome, New York
Shortly after takeoff the crew had indications of a fire and/or overheat with engines 5/6. I believe they shut down both and and proceeded to Griffiss to land. Wx at Griffiss required and ILS to RWY 15 and the a/c was overweight. The first approach was terminated and control of the aircraft was lost during the missed approach. During what sounds like a stall, the A/C CC called for ejection. 2 of 8 crew member made it out of the aircraft and 6 were fatalities. Descriptions account that the aircraft rolled over from approx 2,000 feet. Sounds consistent with a stall but I don't know what would have caused it specifically. What caused the problem was multiple engine failures. The pilot stayed at the yoke and kept plane in air long enough to avoid crashing into trailer park.

The rest of the crew:
1st Lt. William S. Fairhurst, co-pilot - ejected
1st Lt. Sidney W. Glover, radar navigator - ejected but sustained broken leg and chest injuries
Maj. Lloyd D. Lassman, radar navigator - killed
Capt. Joe E. Turner, EWO - killed
S.Sgt. John Nealey Snyder, gunner- killed
S.Sgt. Willard F. Walker, crew chief - killed
Sgt. Gordon S. Flick, crew chief - killed

FOb Warhorse memorial to my brigade during the surge.

If you zoom in and look on the right hand column you'll see the name of Aggie class of 2004 1LT Jeremy Ray. While not assigned to 4-2 SBCT, he was attached to and provided fire support for our battalion. Sort of ironic as we were an arty battalion as well but we were tasked to conduct patrols, raids and other kinetic missions. I ran into him briefly about a week before he was killed while we were on FOB Warhorse. Chatted for about an hour, and then went out separate ways. A week or so later my platoon was on patrol and brigade QRF and I was back at our outpost watching some detainees we had rolled up earlier that day when he was killed by a suicide bomber. He was with a platoon from our Headquarters Battery who had stopped to conduct a leaders meeting. He was the only KIA that day but another dozen or so men were wounded, some severely including our Battalion Chaplain. .

During my second tour to Iraq with 2 2-25 SBCT from 2010 to 2011, I was there from July 2010 to May 2011. We replaced 3-2 SBCT in late July 2010. I remember that FOB Warhorse Memorial.

To the fallen but not forgotten,

Thank you very much as I live in the greatest country in the world because of you. My family has fought in almost every major war from the American Revolutionary War to desert storm but have sustained no losses in combat in my direct line. Infantrymen, flyers and doctors have been in our family and all have been in combat zones. One uncle was lost and is actually MIA after flying patrol in a landing accident in the South Pacific but that is the closest to combat loss.

We are the lucky ones who have gained the benefit of life and it will never be lost on me or my family. If I could show more gratitude I would. Donations of time and money are given but it just doesn't seem enough. In my mind the biggest contribution i do is to learn the history and tell the stories of people who gave so much. I just hope this is enough in the end.

You are not forgotten.

I don't know you and you are welcome to your opinion. I did serve with a few who are burred at our national cemeteries and they wouldn't want anybody to attend a bell ceremony or sit around praying all day. They were by and large hell raisers who would want to go out and whoop it up and enjoy fellowship with their fellow veterans. They would want people to remember them by raising a cold beverage and then turning up the music and throwing another burger on the grill.

So you do you, and I'll go have a party and remember my friends the way I know they would want to be remembered by having a Happy Memorial Day.

Agree, the call is to remember the fallen, how someone does that isn't important.

Attend a ceremony, pour out a cold one for a buddy or just pause for a moment to reflect--whatever.

So long as the country doesn't forget what Memorial Day is about, it's all good.
