" Halvorsen, a World War II vet, gained notoriety when the U.S. pilots flew planeload after planeload of flour and coal to residents in Germany after the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin. When Halvorsen noticed that the children didn't have any sweets, he began throwing small chocolate and gum attached to small parachutes out of the plane."

"From July 1948 to September 1949, Halvorsen and his successors dropped approximately 21 tons of candy on Berlin."

This Brits "bombed" occupied Holland with food and coal in April and May of 1945 with the blessing of the Germans.

Many years ago my childhood best friend's mother told us stories about what they ate for food during the later part of the war. Also told of the "food bombs" that came before the Germans surrendered. That led me to research her stories later in life.

She is 93 and still rides her bike. Of course she does...she's Dutch!

Farley Mowat, the Canadian author of Never Cry Wolf was one of the guys who negotiated the cease-fire that allowed food drops into Holland.

I highly recommend Andrei Cherny's book about Gail "Uncle wiggly wings" Halvorsen. A great book about the Berlin airlift. Nothing better than making children happy.

Flew "the corridor" back in the later 80s while there was still a USSR. Very specified altitude, airspeed... The Godless Commies would have gunship helos come nearby just to say "hello" to us slow moving C-130s. Wasn't too worried, as we were always in radar contact. (Very different from being out around the outer parts of Alaska airspace, when getting harassed by Migs was a little more intense.)

Landing at Templehof and viewing the grand facilities that Hitler had built, Checkpoint Charlie, etc... was pretty awesome.

RIP, all you Berlin Airlifters.
