I gather they are a pretty respected fighting force. No longer the last refuge of the criminals. Interpol scans each prospective recruit. Still can choose a nom de guerre if you desire. Wouldn't say a last resort for many, but with the prospect of French citizenship an opportunity for many to improve their lives and that of there family. Now days it comes across as a modern fighting force. Very brutal training, complete with corporal punishment. Check out a book called "Appelle" by Joel Struthers about a Canadian who joined the FFL in the '90s. He also appeared as a guest on Jocko's podcast a year and a half ago. If I was young and single I'd probably give it a shot. Check out some the videos on YouTube in regards to training and selection of potential recruits, not just anybody can join.

Don't mistake them for regular French army in a dinning hall in country. It could end up in a fight.

In modern times, they have been deployed and active in the Gulf War, Afghanistan, lots of engagements in Africa, etc. I'd say they are a 1st world, very capable unit that can hold their own very effectively.

Edit: in "ancient" times, my time in Nam was in the early years so we had some interactions with the French military - including the Foreign Legion. Found them to be extremely professional and capable.

Yep, they're still well regarded.
