My name is Ken and I did 20 years active duty in the army. I started enlisted in aviation and became a tank officer later on. I also dabbled in National Disaster Planning before I retired. I love military history but will never claim to be anything more than an amateur military historian. However, I will share some of my unsolicited thoughts because.......... I think military history is just interesting. I will not try to illuminate that I am brilliant because I am not. I just like sharing my knowledge.

I often ask why. Why did a nation win a war or a general win a battle. Why were the Mongols successful in defeating principalities in Russia in the middle of winter? I will start a thread called Military Affairs and it will be a running thread with various topics to reduce the overall clutter.

I also wrote a PTSD Self Help Paper that has helped many veterans turn their lives around. It is free and I ask nothing in return. I feel obligated to share what I know. I have no ulterior motives. I just want to give the world my best and it gives me purpose. That is all.

Ken, this is a pretty cool community and many have been around for a long time.

Are you an Ag?

Anyways, are you doing okay?

Thank you for your input. I am an Ag. I was in helicopters, tanks, and national disaster relief. I am not staying in this site.

Varsity and Ags Only are anonymous forums not available to the public. (I noticed you have 3 stars).

Good place to go to. Smart people with (sometimes) great advice.

OP - Someone posted about losing a friend to a helicopter accident. Your response was a lesson in how dangerous helicopters are. Someone overreacted to what they described as a tone deaf remark.

I'd offer that you don't need to go if that's the trigger.

I have been fighting PTSD for 10 years. It was a rough road to take, but I can smile and laugh now. My experiences became the impetus to write a PTSD Self Help Paper that I share with those who have PTSD. That gives me purpose. I take life one day at a time and my mantra is simple: Give my best to the world and gracefully accept what the world gives me. I feel very conflicted now. Take care.

I'd be interested in your PTSD Self Help paper. CPT therapy at the VA did almost nothing for me. I have found that having a goal and finding purpose is THE most important thing for myself as far as not going too far down the rabbit hole. For me, it's easy. Family. Husband and dad of two small kids, so they are my reason. Some people call it their "why". IDK where i'd be without family, dogs and nature. If you need to talk, private message me. Hope you're well.

The approach to the paper is simple. Understand PTSD. Identify symptoms. Use requisite coping skills for the symptoms. The center of gravity is love. Love is the most powerful drug in the world. The paper is called Love Squared and you can find the link in the middle of this page. I hope I am not opening myself for future regret by sharing the paper. I would appreciate feedback as many readers find value in different aspects of the paper. I hope this illuminates a way ahead for you. Perhaps it confirms what you already know.

Perhaps you are right. It really upset me as I have always treated my soldiers with dignity and respect throughout my career. Those were my cardinal rules. To be treated counter to that by fellow veterans was quite appalling to say the least. I was stunned and taken aback. I feel very conflicted. I love the university, Aggie sports, and the military. Thank you for your post. I will sleep on it and decide tomorrow. Have an excellent day sir.

You spent 20 years in the army (and in a combat MOS) and are having a hard time with an Internet forum?

I have PTSD and I need to insulate myself. I don't want the drama. I was extremely bothered by some posts that crossed the line and I am having a hard time reconciling that. I will post until my subscription runs out.

ArmyTanker,

I feel compelled to jump in this thread. This board is a great place to spread info and be among fellow Aggies who are serving or have served in the past.

As with all internet forums though, there will always be breakdowns in communication because expressing oneself via a few typed words oftentimes lacks the important non verbal and verbal cues which help convey meaning.

I say this to make the point that, if you need a place to post, feel free to stay here, just try to learn to have a bit thicker skin (or utilize the ignore button) and not take things so seriously.

My assessment is that you want to be part of our community here, so embrace what it is and don't run from it because it's not perfect.

Hi, Ken

I was an Ordnance officer who got diverted into technical intelligence and ended up evaluating and maintaining 70s era Soviet equipment which was really like 1940s American equipment, except for quality control. Tanks up to T-62, BTR 152, BTR 60, GAZ 69 platform along with their RPD and AKM infantry weapon systems etc along with some of their tracked stuff. My main interests are the Rhodesian southern African Bush/Border Wars from 1966-1989 and the South African arms industries' innovations during the time of international isolation concurrent with apartheid.

I think the problem is that you misunderstood what an Internet Forum is about. It's about give and take, discussions not sermons, and good-natured as well as mean-spirited banter back and forth.

It does appear you have some worthwhile information. If you share it here, do it as a conversation, not a Pronouncement From On High, and it will be better received.

I think your "Military Affairs" thread is a good example. A forum isn't really a place for one person to post long-winded personal thoughts. That thread is much better suited to an online Blog, where you can gain followers and people who care, can read it.

Good luck to you.

Great advice. A blog would probably be very therapeutic.
