I have to give credit to another poster on another board who actually did the work of pulling the passages from the article. It was a great find on his/her part and well worth the read for those who think Sully was some devout racist, slave owner, and traitor. People think things were clear cut back then and they weren't.

For example, George Custer fought for the Union because he believed in maintaining the country. However, he believed in black inferiority, the institution of slavery, the southern way of life, and did not want to fight for a Republican President. Again, not so clear cut. He has a monument in Michigan and West Point by the way.
