On this date in 1914, the Battleship Texas (BB-35) was commissioned. The Texas was launched on 18May1912, but wasn't officially commissioned until 12Mar1914. The Texas took part in three of the most important amphibious operations of World War !!: Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

And she plays a part in Aggie history -

During Operation Neptune, USS Texas is designated as the flagship of the bombing force at Omaha Beach. On June 6, 1944 at 3 o'clock in the morning, it reached its position 11 kilometers off Pointe du Hoc. The bombardment begins at 5:50 am: 255 360-mm shells are fired for 34 minutes at the positions of the German battery.

D-Day+1, Texas sent two LCVPs filled with ammunition to the Rangers, isolated at the top of Pointe du Hoc. 35 wounded are evacuated aboard the boats (as well as prisoners) and a Ranger dies as a result of its injuries aboard Texas.

Those would be 14 inch shells. Texas's Marine Detachment was being readied to be sent ashore to assist Rudders' command. The Army vehemently denied this offer.
