I am going to be spending the night with the corps and I have to choose an outfit to do it with. I've heard a lot of hype about H-1 and E-1 are these good and if so which is better. I'm not biased to these it's just these keep coming to the top. I am looking for an outfit that promotes academics and pushes physical fitness. I understand that this is what every outfit strives for, but who (in your opinion) is the best? Any help is good. Thanks!

Every outfit has a different vibe. It's really hard to recommend one without knowing what is important to you, your goals, etc.

D-1 Spider D. Lot's of tradition, tough freshman year, tight knit network (and largest alumni group in the entire Corps)...a bunch of dudes that like to have fun.

I'm way too far out from my time in the Corps to offer an opinion without it being completely biased based on my personal experience and outdated information. That being said, there's a 97.9% chance you'll be happy in whatever outfit you join. And probably a 75% chance you'll want to join whatever outfit you spend the night with. Just keep in mind that every outfit tries to put their best foot forward during SNWC.

*Disclaimer: percentages are approximations

I was in E-1 we will push physical fitness. But if that is one of your biggest priorities go to H-1. Those guys were in damn good shape while I was in the Corps

What is E-1's views on academics?

Our view on Academics is it is ultimately up to the cadet to take care of business himself. My senior year we had cadets with 4.0's and 2.0's.. the CO and I made sure that fish got to tutoring if needed. But ultimately it will fall on you to make sure you actually sit your butt down and study I went from a 2.5 my fish fall to consistently around 3.3.. Not because the outfit changed its perception on academics but I did.

Well, objectively speaking, A-Batt has placed first in the General Moore Award standings 4 of the last 5 years, and been awarded it 3 of the last 5 (placed first in 2014 but weren't given the award). So if you're looking for "best" that's hard to argue with.

As for non-Band outfits (i.e. second tier units), the answer will depend on what ROTC you're interested in. Traditionally, Air Force outfits are considered to have a stronger focus on academics, although this isn't always true.

You can have a great experience in any unit, and they'll all tell you they focus on academics and PT. Squadrons 4 and 11 are solid outfits that I would recommend looking into

Back in the day, your selection of an ROTC program was not dispositive of your outfit selection. I've seen folks in the Brigade taking NAVY ROTC.

Sq 4 and 11 are also far different from each other... Sq 4 is Navy/Marine Sq 11 is Air force

Also you don't have to be the same branch as your outfit its just suggested to do that at your NSC. Every branch has different times for their activities so if you don't match your outfit then you may be there when others aren't or the inverse.

I am looking for an outfit that promotes academics and pushes physical fitness. I understand that this is what every outfit strives for, but who (in your opinion) is the best? Any help is good. Thanks!

Grades and physical fitness are the best criteria by which to evaluate outfits, you are ahead of the power curve recognizing this. Having retired from the military and moved on to my second (and now third) career I can say without question, grades should always be at the front of your mind, followed by getting in great shape, closed by having as much fun as possible.
When I was in undergrad I cared about marching, and clean rooms and all the other things that have no correlation to long term success. Grades & physical fitness directly correlate with long term success, especially in the military. So when evaluating outfits look at how they handle academics, fitness, and if you think you can have fun with these guys. To this end E-1 (Army) & H-1 (Navy/Marines) are fine choices to which I would only add Squadron 17 (Air Force).
I graduated far too long ago to have any first had knowledge of what the modern Corps is like, but have stayed connected through family and friends kids to still know a bit & Jock 15 had the right of it. Almost every outfit in the "Modern Corps" promotes academics. It really is more about what does the outfits culture value; what is your fish classes personal attitude towards grades before and after starting at A&M; what majors do you and your fish class have; what is your semester by semester load, ect Those are the things that will really shape your experience and those are all things you cannot find out until you are in your outfit.

Now a bit about the various awards:

This year's Parent's Weekend Awards:
Commandant's Flag speaks indirectly to a culture promoting extra outfit involvement, this is a good thing!
Commandant's Flag (Outfit Involvement in Activities Both on and Off the Quad): 1st Place - SQ-17; 2nd Place - D-2; 3rd Place - E-1

I'm not sure what the criteria are, but Sec Def Gates was a great man and public service should be strongly encouraged.
Robert Gates Flag (Public Service): 1st Place - SQ-18; 2nd Place - SQ-2; 3rd Place - SQ-17

I fully understand why the Commandant and his staff would promote this, however I personally would avoid any outfit which won the General Sanchez.
JJ Sanchez Flag (Recruiting and Retention): 1st Place - A Co Band; 2nd Place - SQ-2; 3rd Place - SQ-11

If one outfit consistently won or placed for this several years in a row I would give them strong consideration, otherwise every year varies too much to put much stock in past years academic success as a likely indicator of future success.
George P.F. Jouine Flag (Academic Excellence): 1st Place - A-1; 2nd Place - D-2; 3rd Place - F-2

Not sure what the criteria are, no opinion.
Bruno Hochmuth Flag (Military Proficiency): 1st Place - SQ-11; 2nd Place - SQ-16; 3rd Place - D-2

Not sure what the criteria are, no opinion.
Taylor Gillespie Flag (Most Improved Outfit): 1st Place - P-2; 2nd Place - D-2; 3rd Place - A-1

Not sure what the criteria are, no opinion.
President's Flag (Outstanding Major Unit): 1st Wing

Avoid these outfits like the plague. The General Moore flag incorporates drill proficiency, room cleanliness, ect outfits which focus on these elements more than necessary (which is a prerequisite to win the award) do so at the expense of what matters (grades, fitness, having fun) & should be avoided.
General George F. Moore Flag (Outstanding Unit): 1st Place - A Co Band; 2nd Place - SQ-11; 3rd Place - SQ-2

On a final note, join an un-integrated outfit. Nothing against integrated outfits but there is a lot you can do in an all-male environment that is generally not possible in a co-ed environment. Not to mention if physical fitness and having fun are top criteria, then all male outfits are in much better shape and I would take ten to one odds have more fun.

I disagree with this a bit. I felt being in an integrated outfit helped me. There will never be another point in you life where you can avoid being subordinate to, working with, or being the supervisor of women. I felt I was able to deal with female soldier issues much better in the Army because I had already dealt with many of the in the Corps. I think those lessons go for most professional careers as well.

If you are looking for a stronger fraternal organization type experience (more frat like), then that plays a bigger role, sure. There is nothing wrong with that if you are. And no, you can't walked around naked and the jokes are less crude in an integrated outfit. But if you are looking for this experience to prepare you for a future career in the military, you might as well start working with women. Just my humble opinion.

And wow, there are so many flags now. And I agree. Outfits constantly trying to get the Moore Award are less fun.

Just depends on what you are looking for. I'm retired Armor & almost all my professional interactions with women were in an office enviorment. I don't think being in an integrated v. un-integrated unit helps or hurts much (if at all) in that situation. I'm also not sure being in an all male outfit at A&M made a difference while serving in all male units in big Army. Just depends on what you personally desire.

However if physical fitness is a priority all male outfits provide a better opportunity to maximize your strength & endurance.

Also FWIW Caddyshack & Animal House are two of my favorite movies, if you don't like that kind of humor all male might not be for you. Just depends on what you want.

I'm well aware of the ROTC affiliations of those two outfits, they were just two turd outfits that I thought highly of.

Interesting about the ROTC. As late as my zip year (last year) the recruiting policy was to try and actually have cadet ROTC affiliations in line with the official affiliation of the unit. I was a BQ, so I more saw that second hand, but it's interesting if the tune from the Commandant's office has changed that quickly

Actually, General Moore is equal parts military proficiency (PT, inspections, march-ins ect.), grades, recruiting/retention and involvement.

A-Co, who won it this year, puts a high focus on PT and running, and consequently has some of the best PT scores in the Corps.

When we won it when I was in A-Batt, we always marketed ourselves as a grades unit and generally placed high in Jouine.

It may have been different back in the day, but now GM is a pretty good indicator of a unit that has their stuff together in all areas. But I'm biased

Good point. I had a completely different Army experience. I was an MP and deployed to Iraq with female soldiers and female officers (with whom I had to share a room in one of Saddam's Palaces). Now that the Army is fully integrated though, I am not sure if there are going to be too many days left where you don't have female soldiers you have to take to the field.

So it includes inspections and drill (march-ins)? Exactly what I said? So you are saying "Actually, [it is exactly what you said it is]." So A-Co won the Bloody Cross? O-Course comp? Had the highest PT in the Corps? Top two? Top three? Was not top three in any of those events*? So how exactly did they win it by focusing on PT and running when they did not come in the top three in any of the PT and running events?
Edit: If Charlie Brown is right & actual PT scores don't factor in to GM: then GM has even less value.

Outfits which consistently have good grades, and fitness should be at the top of anyone's list. A single good year of either is not very indicative of future success. Sustained good grades and fitness are as good an indicator as anything.

*I am getting this out of the Corps magazine, if they did place and were left out they should let the CCA know.

The PT section of Military Proficiency is just what % of cadets are passing the PFT and Ht/Wt. It doesn't take PT scores into account.

E-1 has a big focus on intermural sports, playing football, softball, basketball and soccer. They are currently carrying two of the three athletic flags. The current fish were the football and soccer champions. Many of the upperclassmen are on Corps athletic teams as well. If you enjoy playing team sports the E-1 Jocks is a good outfit.

I realize you're D-2, seems like a great outfit! Can you give me a little of your take on B-2? I'm just curious as our son is weighing both B-2 and D-2. His SNWC was with C-2 and his Aggie Eagle night with B-2. He'll be Army ROTC, Construction Science major, Military Focus as his goal is to Commission with the army, not the reserves. (I'm not too schooled on any of this and am glad that he will have great leadership in the Corps guiding him.)

Congrats on your son's decision to join the Corps and ultimately the Army. From a recent grad both D-2 and B-2 have a high commissioning rate. I think the big difference is B-2 felt like it was focused soley on commissioning and preparing their cadets for the army while D-2 focused more on overall on quad and off the quad involvement. If others have a better insight feel free to add. Just saying what I felt the difference was between the two

I hadn't followed up on this thread, but that is a good way to describe it. I was in D-2 from '04-'08 and one of the things I liked was a good mix of ROTC contract cadets (we had some Marine Corps contract cadets) and the D&C (Drill and Ceremony) cadets. It was almost split evenly within each class (fish through senior). I always thought the balance was good for the overall wellness of the unit.
