A classic lesson in the importance of minority voters showing up to the polls and voting as a block.
Is the author going to target Black churches next?

I was surprised when Ronnie B '93 got elected but... I can't believe they left "Boo Boo" off the list of non-Corps members who managed to beat the "system".

So, near the end of the article, we see what the agenda is all about. We need an openly LGBTQ... Yell Leader.
I guess the decades of closeted BQs and Aggie Wranglers aren't sufficient for this author, we must have a Yell Leader who is "Out". Good Luck with that. Instead of taking on Texas A&M, it would probably easier to just transfer to Berkeley.

15 years ago (when Boo Boo was elected) there was only one out cadet. Today there are several, and there have been dozens of out cadets in the last decade. It's not a big deal anymore, so it's probably just a matter of time before it happens, but I don't see any need to have one just for the sake of having one. If the best choice for yell leader happens to be gay, fine. If the gay guy is the worst choice, then he shouldn't be elected.

If I'm understanding this correctly, you (or the person writing the article if it's not you) is complaining about how it is far more difficult for non-regs to be elected as yells leaders?

I get the idea of "Wanting a fair chance for all Aggies who want to represent their alma mater" but seriously, if someone really wants to be a yell leader, then they should've taken the necessary actions that give them the best possible chance, in this case, they should've joined the Corps to begin with.

Last time I checked the Corps will accept pretty much anyone into the program as long as they apply for Corps housing. The opportunities are equal, however in this instance the non-reg candidate chose early on in his academic career to take the arguably easier path of being a non-reg.

It's not our faulty he chose the easy path. But then again, why would we want someone who chose the easy path to represent us?

The more things change the more they stay the same. We had a non-reg yell leader in my class. The man later ran for governor of our great state.

One of the many things they didn't tell you about at fish camp was there was a near riot at Kyle Field at the first yell practice when he came out with a junior stack on his belt buckle.

interesting... if I google non-reg and yell leader, I find a thread on TexAgs from 2006 and a Wikipedia article.
I was curious who the Class of '70 non-reg was. The 2006 thread had it on page 1.

Unfortunately crap like that comes out every year around this time (i.e. Student elections). The commandant and his staff have done a great job of making the corps visible around campus once again and I'll be damned if some stupid article is going to ruin the reputation of how well the corps is doing.

The gentleman in question is Gary Maurro (sp?). He later ran for governor as a democrat. I don't remember if he ran against Clements or Bush. Look it up if you want to.

This just keeps getting worse. Gary is also a sip lawyer. He was the longest serving Commissioner of the General Land Office. He was a true believer as a democrat. Spring break 1970, we're passed out drunk on the beach at Port A and first thing in the morning here comes Gary in a jeep with bull horn asking people to vote for Ralph Yarborough in the democratic primary. Smiling Ralph lost to Lloyd Benson.

Howdy from Chicago, where we still have a real live political machine. You could take Liberal Ag's posting and change Corps to Greeks and change the name of the school it would apply. The Corps cares about this more than other students, so they usually win election.

A group of Florida State students in the 90's got tired of seeing the Greeks win campus elections. They started The Monarchy Party and with a ticket that included Charlie Ward (FSU football and basketball star), won the campus elections.

When you are a patronage worker, you are going to do what it takes to organize your block and get your friends and family to "Vote Early and Vote Often". Your job depends on it. We're not playing a game of bags. It's politics, and it can be contact sport.

I can't believe I read that tripe. The corps doesn't win only because it votes as a block. If so, there would never be non-reg yell leaders. The corps wins because the corps votes as a block, encourages voting, AND it does a great job convincing girls to vote for them. The girls make the difference.

Plus the rest of the premise is dumb anyway. No one outside of the student body knows if the Yell Leaders are corps or not. Ricky Wood basically had a CT haircut and BooBoo did too. If you weren't educated about it, you would see the uniform and just assume that they were corps members. Plus, If an openly gay guy gets elected as Yell Leader, no one outside of those who know the man will know it. Its not like ESPN does in depth profiles on the yell leaders every year. They get 30 seconds of airtime each game at most. I guess other folks on campus would feel better about it, but the rest of the world would just think he is just another CT.

further more the individual member of the Corps cast their own vote, guess what they can vote for the non reg and nobody would know. Again how big is the Corps, how big is the non reg student body. If this was a big deal, the non regs could vote block the Corps outta everything.
