I received the following from a friend. Perhaps I'm looking at this too simply but why would ANY one pass up the opportunity to retire early and get a full year's base pay as a bonus? The government would not stat to break even on this until the retiree has lived at least ~40 years (2.5% * Hi-3 pay * 40 years). This would sure chase me out of the military a year before I am required to retire.

quote:
The Senate's NDAA version authorizes one year of base pay as an incentive for officers with more than 20 years (but not within one-year of mandatory retirement) to retire. This idea originated with Navy and endorsed by the
other services. The buyout in the NDAA is to remain in effect until 2018. I've attached a link to the NDAA which the Senate passed last week. Identical language is contained in the House version. The early retirement buy out is in section 502 starting on page 122.

people still holding out for a possible promotion?

That would make sense except for the fact that officers reaching high year tenure have *usually* been in the promotion zone and passed at least once before reaching the last year of their eligibility. The regular promotion point for LtCol in the Marine Corps is about 17 years of commissioned service and they don't reach time in grade limitation until long after being passed for promotion. I suppose that there are some Colonels who would stick around till year 30 hoping to be selected for BGen but not many.

As an O-5 with 21 years in back in the day (20 years ago), I would have jumped all over that.

Having gotten crossways with an O-6 in a high position in my command, that offer would have been a godsend. No way in hell was a I competitive for O-6.

Punched out at 21 years, got a great post retirement job, and never looked back. But that offer would have certaintly sweetened my exit.

Well, it authorizes UP to 1 year. Not sure the service secretaries will go for all 12 months. I may jump on that myself if they go the limit!

Remember...Authorization does not equal intent...they are just putting things in place in case they are needed.

We've been authorized a Roth TSP for years.

What I'm hearing rumors about is the option to retire at 15 years (35% instead of 50%). Since I'll probably be at my primary zone look for O5 at 15 years, it would be a colossally stupid move for me to take that.

Endo - It looks like we'll finally get that Roth TSP in a few months.

I'd be all over that 15 year retirement.

Not me. Why retire as an O4 when I could retire as an O5?

Will this apply to USAR and ANG?

Probably not...

I'm guessing not. Since reservists and guardsmen don't draw pensions until age 62 the bean counters are not so worried that you will live past the age o 102 so they aren't offering this bonus.

I'll be an O5 at 15 years, and I really don't think I want to be a BN CDR

Did you make Major Below the Zone? If not, unless you make LTC BZ, you're not making O5 at 15 years. That's not how it works. BZ look for LTC is 5 fiscal years after the FY you make Major in. PZ look for LTC is 6 years after.

I made Major at 9 1/2 years and will likely make LTC at 16 years at the earliest.

I took the VSIP early out in '92. I took the lump sum and invested it well......bottomline if you want to really be s soldier then stay until they throw you out if not bail. You are looking at terrible hiring for real jobs and the best chance for something DoD related is in DC. I did that and retired from the Pacific Northwest National Lab in 07 and haven't looked back.
