A BIG part of me wishes we'd learned more from Sherman than we did. Or at least would turn a blind eye to his tactics, if we can't embrace them.

Sherman shortened his war by 3 years by his march to the sea. Imagine if we used his tactics today with modern (non nuclear) armaments.

Loosening the ROE won't contribute to our strategic objectives.

Of course, that is of little concern to the US soldier who is killed or wounded in combat.

I do not know who came up with the current ROEs in Afghanistan, but I'd be willing to bet they never wore the uniform, or if they did, they were never shot at. One of the reasons I think the Presidency should be restricted to those who have served.

The ROE are for strategic goals. Commanders must accomplish their tactical tasks in support of the strategic goals in this war. Commanders don't have the liberty of living in a vaccuum such as those from WW2/Korea/Vietnam/etc
