Rather than resurrect an old thread, let me start a new one on this topic so it will be more visible to those interested.

Some months ago we had a discussion of whether there had been a cannon used at Kyle Field prior to the one currently used. I posted a video of the A&M-tu game in 1963 clearly showing a cannon on the track in the north end zone.

Today I happened to be looking through the book "Keepers of the Spirit" and found a photo of that 105 mm howitzer, Ol' Sarge, at Kyle Field, being loaded by Ken Koch '66 and Malon Southerland '65. The photo is on page 213.

Just talked with LTC Gardener at the Corps Center who is director here as well as one of the Cav advisors . He was unaware of this cannon but we looked at the museum copy of Keepers of the Spirit ad sure enough there was the picture. He said best place to find more info on it would be Cushing

During my Senior year 1960, as best as I can remember, some Army Cadets while in the woods southeast of campus found an old cannon. It was brought back to the Mechancial Engineering building, cleaned and perhaps re-painted. During the tu game it was pushed on to Kyle field by a group of Field Artillery fish. My fish old lady, Pete Reyes'60 from Beeville Texas was OD and marched onto the field with the cannon. There is a picture of the event in the 1960 Aggieland on pages 18 & 19. The cannon was never fired at this game.
I have no idea who found the cannon or what happened to it. The gun is very similar to the one currently in use. For all I know the Cadets that found the gun might have taken it back and dumped it in the dry creek where they found it. Never saw it again.
When the Corps started using the current cannon I often wondered if it was the same gun from 1960. Perhaps there were more than one cannons? Seems unlikely A&M would have lost two cannons but who knows.
