The number of unemployed vets has been splashed across many news outlets and job boards recently. Although I am more fortunate than many of our brothers and sisters, that is not a statistic of which I want to be a part. I am a 20-year USAF loggie looking to bring my leadership and expertise to a company that appreciates both as a means for its continued growth and success. I am currently in San Antonio, but will re-locate for the right career. I have cast a wide net from civil service, to FedEx, to start-up O&G companies, with no interest. I appreciate whatever guidance and assistance you can offer. Thank you for your service, and Gig 'Em!

Go take a look around on the careers board here. Start a post like this and see where it goes.

Good luck!

AR,

I did the other day on the jobs and San Antonio forums...several views but no replies. I may have to give each a little bump.

Though I wish you well, the above is pretty much bullcrap. Veteran unemployment is bad, but still better than the general population.

do people who retire from the military considered unemployed in that statistic or just ones that get out? not trying to cause problems just wondering

sek92,

That is a very good distinction. I don't know how the numbers break out. I am retired, drawing retirement pay, not unemployment. However, at this stage of my life, I am looking for another career (still have to work versus wanting to work). I guess where you sit is where you stand. Maybe my personal definition of "unemployed" is at odds with that of the bean counters. Thanks for the discussion.

I saw a statistic the other day that showed the percentage of unemployed that were college graduates vs non-graduates. Don't remember the split, but it was a WTF moment when I saw it. I am thinking it was barely 4% for grads. Don't get too concerned, everyone is looking for "a few good men".

I know, it's brutal. As frustrating as it is for me to find something, with all the experience I have, I can't imagine what recent or soon-to-be grads will face. Having said that, I have seen a lot of internship opportunities across the spectrum of industries.

Come work over here in Afghanistan for a year or two. Plenty of LOG contractor jobs and really good $$$.

Cav,

I have applied for a few jobs over there, some LOGCAP IV. I have applied with some of the larger companies, and a few smaller ones that didn't get awarded the bid. It's frustrating because having been over there before deploying units in and out, I know things don't happen over night, despite the drawdown. I saw a few jobs listed for Camp Leatherneck the other day. I can't remember with which company but I will have to look those up again. Stay safe over there.

Herk, thanks for the reply. I have tried to solicit feedback from folks in the log (and other) industries regarding formal degrees and/or certifications. I have my post-9/11 G.I. Bill and want to use it prudently. Unfortunately, it appears folks are too busy to respond to my enquiries. I also took a job part time at a golf course, but cleaning up stale beer spilled on golf carts can only provide so much sanity.
